George O'Brien is a married to Janet Gaynor, but how ya gonna keep him down on the farm when he's tasted the fruits of a slutty city gal? She talks him into drowning his wife, but the attempt goes awry and, chastened, he decides to rededicate himself to her happiness. But is it too late? Great movie (GREAT movie) from F.W. Murnau, one of my fave silent filmmakers (The Last Laugh, Nosferatu). (He was killed in a car crash in 1931, alas.) Winner of three Academy Awards at the first Academy ceremony, including Best Actress for Gaynor, Best Cinematography, and "Most Unique and Artistic Production", the only time that award was handed out. Filled with memorable moments and creative camerawork (watch George & Janet walking across a busy street, suddenly through a field of flowers, and then back to the street again) and marvelous vignettes. A truly beautiful, fascinating, and engrossing film. The Fox DVD (part of its Studio Classics series, but a special release; you had to buy several of the darn things to get this one, dunno if it's available separately these days) is one of the great DVDs ever put together. Not only do you get the remarkable film, looking excellent for its age, but commentary, outtakes, the original script, a reconstruction of Murnau's lost film Four Devils (with the script), and even the Sunrise scenario by Carl Mayer with annotations by Murnau. Oh, and the original trailer! All on one disc that was FREE. Very impressive. |

Sunrise was on Turner the other day. It was a great movie. The music score added much to it. I believe it is going to be replayed shortly. Do not miss this one. |
