I read today that an upcoming DVD release of The Deputy is planned. This is coming from Timeless Media, the same company that brought us Laredo and some other shows. The 3-disc set will contain 12 episodes and is scheduled for an October release. I think Amazon.com currently has it up for sale for about $24.

I guess LG this is where the Generation Gap comes into play. "The Deputy" was a western tv series filmed at Universal that starred Henry Fonda and Allen Case.

Henry Fonda played the Marshal and Allen Case played the Deputy. It's a spin-off of sorts of Henry's feature film entitled: "The Tin Star" (1957) starring Henry Fonda, Tony Perkins, Betsy Palmer, John McIntyre and Neville Brand.

"The Tin Star" was directed by Anthony Mann and released by Paramount and this film is available on DVD.

"The Deputy" tv series aired 1959 -1961. The series consisted of 76 episodes. Henry Fonda played Simon Fry, Allen Case played Clay McCord.

I believe it originally aired on Saturday nights 8:00 - 8:30 p.m or 8:30 - 9:00 p.m. We watched it at our house weekly. Henry Fonda was my Dad's favourite actor.

Regards:

Ron McKnight.

Actually, according to one of my TV books, it ran Saturday nights at 9pm. I remember the show and did manage to rent one of those cheap DVDs awhile back that had one episode of it. I enjoyed that and look forward to getting more of this series.

I have a number of episodes on DVD and VHS and the series is average compared to other TV westerns. If you love Henry Fonda, it's a must.

Small note: Timeless is NOT paying the big bucks to acquire prints struck from the studio's 35 mm masters. They are only paying for licensing. So whatever prints they feature on the commercial releases (this includes Wagon Train and others they are planning), do not expect SUPERB prints. They'll be good to great, but nowhere what they could be.
