I'm game! I'd been sorta subconciously wanting to do that anyway, but my efforts have so far pretty much centered around musicals, who done its, noir, serious stuff and serials. Xenomorphs still scare me though! |

Well, I kicked it off with a classic screen comedy today... Mr. Roberts (1955). What a cast! Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell, Ward Bond, and Jack Lemmon. Now, you folks know me, and how I am. I preceded the film with a cartoon and a serial chapter. First up was the 1957 Baby Huey cartoon Pest Pupil; the box ox of a duckling has been harming his schoolmates, so he gets home-schooled by a tutor, who spends the next 6 minutes being harmed by his student in a variety of painful ways. Then came "Sea Saboteurs", the first thrill-packed (well, actually, to call it "stock footage-packed" would be more accurate) episode of Trader Tom of the China Seas. |

I inadvertently fulfilled my Singin’ and Dancin’ category this morning when I awoke around 3 AM and couldn’t go back to sleep. I turned on the Fox Channel and they were showing Sun Valley Serenade (1941), a picture it seems like they’ve been showing about twice a week for around an eternity, or so, and a picture I’d steadfastly avoided because I’d confused it with another Sonja Henie vehicle and I thought I’d already seen it. Well, you didn't say we had to watch the movies in order, or set a time limit.
Oops, I guess ya did say in order, didn't ya? OK, I'll go find sumthin' funny.

Tonight's viewing began with a really eerie Mutt & Jeff cartoon called Dog Gone, courtesy of a wonderful DVD from Inkwell Images; a German sausage-maker is rounding up strays and grinding them up into product. Ick. Then, I watched "Death Takes the Deck", the second sinister episode of Trader Tom of the China Seas, which could be called Captain Marvel meets Fu Manchu and calls S.O.S. Coast Guard. Then, looking for a particular film in my "Drama Section", I came across The Informer by John Ford instead, and said, hey, why the heck not. |

Mr Gravy... are we supposed to watch a serial when we get to The Next Chapter? Seems kinda weird to me. Am I to assume we will watch a serial and then continue with the serial as the watch the other challenge areas? |

That is one CREEPY-ass avatar, Stony. What was the question? Oh, yeah. Well, well, well... I have thought long and hard about the whole serial question, and decided I'm either going to watch a documentary on the making of serials (I have a few) or maybe I'll have a "serial marathon" with one chapter of a bunch of serials, or maybe I'll count Trader Tom of the China Seas, which as I've mentioned I'm watching a chapter at a time along with a cartoon and each of my Balcony Challenge features. Or maybe... |

Wouldn't a documentary on the making of serials be a DOCUMENTARY? Lots of questions.....I'll figure something out...Oh yeah, I continued the challenge tonight by fulfilling the great movie detectives section by watching a Tony Rome flick.

Would a documentary on serials be counted under "serials" or "documentaries"? Well, would Nosferatu be counted under "horror" or "silent"? Oooh -- what about Metropolis? Silent? Sci-Fi? Or Foreign? Is Destry Rides Again a western or a comedy? If only life were simple, we'd be simpletons instead of Balconeers... |
