The new Charley Chase set is reviewed by Dave Kehr (and so is Repulsion; how's THAT for a double-feature?!?) at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/26/movies/homevideo/26kehr.html?ref=homevideo.

ATTENTION!!

TCM is showing 4 Charley Chase shorts tonight. All four (BAD BOY, ISN'T LIFE TERRIBLE, THE UNEASY THREE & MAMA BEHAVE) were directed by Leo McCarey & were produced in the mid-20's.

The first one goes on at 12:00 midnight ET... & that's why it pays to live in California. We get it three hours earlier!!

.......or live in Washington. But DVR's don't care when it comes on anyway.

Thanks for the heads up.

I saw where this was on last night, because I TCM usually shows silent films on Sunday night. I am going to have to get myself a DVD recorder or a Tivo.

Be aware that Tivo uses proprietary software that will only let you access the discs you may record by downloading their software AND they only allow that software to be downloaded by users who are also subscribers to their tv guide service. That's why I dumped mine and got a regular DVR.

Peanuts and Bullets (1915)

The first film on the Chase set; typical Keystone farce. Charley is a starving artist who can't get out of the boarding house because he can't pay the landlady, so he steals food from the peanut vendor/fruit cart beneath his window. Meanwhile, he competes with another boarder, a carnival strong man, for the hand of the girl. In the end, the Keystone Kops appear to sort things out.

Like I said, typical Keystone. The characters involve us, the audience, by constantly turning to us and miming what it is they're going to do, or by laughing at their own antics. Charley was in his early 20s when he made this 1-reeler, and was wearing his own moustache, nice to see in a silent comic.
