A couple of Oxford boys need a chaperone so that they can woo a pair of beautiful young ladies, and it just so happens that Charley's aunt is arriving from Brazil ("where all the nuts come from"). When she's detained, though, school chum Sydney Chaplin in drag will do just as well, if he can avoid the advances of a pair of would-be husbands. Based on the hit Brandon Thomas play of the late 19th century, the story of Charley's Aunt is most familiar to me, as I'm sure it is to you, via the 1941 classic screen version with Jack Benny, but according to the IMDB it's been filmed nearly 30 times. The Syd Chaplin version is very funny; I am oft trepidatious about silent films adapted from plays, because there's a tendency to overdue the title cards, but that's not a problem here. Chaplin is quite funny in his own right, the girls are delicious, Lucien Littlefield has a major part, and I laughed out loud several times, so I can't ask for more. The print and piano score were both very good; the film can be found on the new American Slapstick Vol. 2 set. |
