On a dark road somewhere in mid-California at 4:00 a.m., a Highway Patrolman is ordered to stop all vehicles. Turns out the Russkies have launched The Big One and in 70 min., a hydrogen bomb is going to level the area, although why the Russians would want to take out Bakersfield is anybody's guess. So a group of fightin' Americans -- including an old man and his hot granddaughter, a married couple who no longer love each other, a gambler and his sleazy girlfriend, and a homicidal maniac -- spend their last hour trying to make a bomb shelter out of a big truck. I liked this movie, but you know me. Dramatic highlight? There's a guy who loses his temper and beats up a chicken coop. Understand, he doesn't beat up the COOP -- oh, no. He tears it open and beats up the (live) chickens. Yes, the man BEATS UP CHICKENS. You have to see it to believe it. The worst thing about this movie? Seamon Glass as the cop. He's absolutely terrible; his name would more accurately be Seamon Me. I was shocked to discover that he actually had a lengthy set of credits on IMDB. I assumed the guy signed to play the CHiPs officer showed up shit-faced and they substituted the caterer 'cause he fit the uniform. This is available on DVD as a double-feature with Atomic War Bride and a slew of those "Duck and Cover"- type shorts, from Something Weird. Highly recommended, but don't blame me if you hate it. Not everybody has the same affinity for terrible movies that I do. |
