Searching for food in the bleak winter of 1944, two Russian soldiers run into a platoon of Germans, and face their destiny in opposite ways.

Larisa Shepitko was a brilliant Ukrainian filmmaker who was killed in an auto accident not long after making this Christian allegorical film. Two of her films, this and Wings (1966), have recently been released as part of the Criterion Eclipse collection.

The Ascent is a beautiful film to look at, at once as harsh as a Russian winter but showing the humanity of its characters. It's brilliant. It works as both art and as a simple story about two men and how they react differently in the same situation. It's also a heartbreaking vignette about war. Highest recommendation.
"I'm glad that this question came up, because there are so many ways to answer it that one of them is bound to be right." - Robert Benchley
