Visions of pirates, great sea battles, grand old fighting ships, sword fights and general swashbucklery filled my imagination as I sat down to view The Sea Hawk, 1940, with Errol Flynn, Claude Rains and Flora Robson. Unfortunately, most of that was played down in favor of intrigue and love. It seems Spain was having difficulty funding their Armada, ‘cause a group of English pirates called The Sea Hawks, kept rippin’ off their shipments of gold and jewels from the New World. As soon as the Armada was completed, however, they planned to conquer England, so ya can’t really blame them Englishmen fer wantin’ ta plunder their riches. The movie is filled with flies in the ointment and skullduggery between the two nations and concerning The Sea Hawks, but not the action film I was expecting. It’s still a pretty good movie though. :)

This one I have in the Errol Flynn boxset. I thought it was one of the best films in that set.

As pirate films go, I don't think Errol Flynn (without computer graphics or a lick of eyeliner) in 1935's Captain Blood can be beat.
