Youth Run Wild (VCI, $14.99) is, odd titling aside, an interesting double-feature from VCI Entertainment. The gem of the duo is a 1960 exploitation gem distributed by Universal, Too Soon to Love. Jennifer West’s teenage hormones land her in big, BIG trouble with the help of boyfriend Richard Evans, and this being 1960 and all, her options are limited: face dad (who slaps her a lot) or search out a back alley you-know-what. The clueless boyfriend (on their first date, he compliments her for being friendly because “in school, you’re like a vegetable”) is not much help, try as he might. If you don’t take an inopportune potty break, you’ll spot Jack Nicholson as one of the high school crowd (the bad-tempered one). This is an excellent film, actually, and it kept me interested throughout. The co-feature is Unwed Mother with Robert Vaughn, not in the titular role. VCI offers the films as “widescreen” but they both look full-screen to me; VCI appears to have “stretched” the first film and matted the second one to approximate widescreen, and both films deserve better treatment than that. Playing with the ratio aspects on your TV and DVD player will help, but hopefully, this faux widescreen attempt was an experiment that won't be repeated. |
