A wonderful collection, although already it cries out for a volume two. LIMOUSINE LOVE (available on a German DVD) got bigger laughs than almost any other comedy I've ever shown. |

I'm plenty glad to buy it (and I will, the day it comes out) but I agree that there ought to be a second volume. Chase has such a high quality body of work, and has been neglected for so long, that we're really very lucky to be getting releases like this (and the earlier KINO dvds). |

This is great news! I'm glad I held off buying these from any of those "grey-market" dealers, with their spotty quality. Plus, they don't really deserve to profit from something they had no hand in creating. Making a transfer from one DVD to another doesn't count as creative input. We can all tape/burn stuff. Much better that we support the studio releases, so they will continue to put out more of the classic stuff. |

"Grey Market" dealers are not bad. Rodney has a two-disc set of sound shorts that are really good quality. Half of the 11 shorts have Thelma Todd in them. Best quality next to a restoration print. It depends on the vendors you buy from who do or do not care about quality, not the market. Recommend Rodney's two-disc set. |

Batman, you're not likely to find "studio releases" of 90 year old Keystone comedies. All Day Entertainment does top notch work, or rather, Reel Classics does top notch work that All Day releases, but "studio releases" they ain't. The set that Shelby speaks of are direct transfers of Blackhawk 16mm prints of Roach sound shorts. I paid for the transfer of these shorts to DVD myself. I'm not just copying other people's stuff. There are guys who do that, and guys who don't. I don't know if you got burned or what, but this is the second time I've seen you put this EXACT post, griping about how awful grey market dealers are in a thread. I have always thought the grey market consisted of two differnet kinds of vendors -- originators and copycats. Copy cats are people who buy discs from wherever they can get it and then sell them as cheap as they can to compete against others -- including cheap discs and paper sleeves. Originators take the time to seek out the masters, do the transfers, and do full-color attractive packaging. Difficult to tell which is which but if you question a vendor and find they lied (thus they tell you what you want to hear for the sake of selling the item), then you know they are a copycat. ioffer is loaded with TONS of people who are copycats. While it's true they can have good quality at a really cheap price, you're still getting what you paid for. Rodney is an originator. Heck, he's the only person I send masters to after I do my own transfers of select series that may be of interest to him. And I've never purchased anything in bad quality from him. Once in a while it's questionable, but it's the only source material and as good as it's going to get under the circumstances. Reminds me of the time Fred Shay once sold me a cliffhanger serial for $300 and swore it was from the original 16 mm master he owned. I saw the word "play" pop up on the screen and it clearly came from a VHS, the serial was not chaptered, and I later bought the same serial from Rodney and got WAY better quality for $10.00. Best part about these message boards is you can learn who is a copycat and who is an originator. While we may all have varying degrees of standards expected from DVDs, the originators usually meet expectations if not exceed them. |

Due to soft sales of American Slapstick 2 and the Harry Langdon set, the Charley Chase set has been shelved until the economy improves. |

I bought both American Slapstick 2 and the Langdon set! What do these people want from me? |

How do you find the second volume, Igsy? I have AMERICAN SLAPSTICK Vol. 1 and have enjoyed it, so I am considering getting the second volume. Is it worth it? |

I purchased my copy at DVD Pacific: http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=959600 I used to be a dyed-in-the-wool Deep Discount.com partisan, but I've been discovering more and more that Pacific often out-discounts DD.com...and since (I know, they call themselves "Pacific"--I don't understand it either) they're based out of Florida and I live one state over, I can take now take advantage of their free shipping (Media Mail) policy and have my stuff sent to me fairly quickly. If you're a silent comedy fan, and you liked the first American Slapstick--then you can't go wrong with this set. It contains the 1925 feature film Charley's Aunt (with Syd Chaplin) which alone is worth the price of admission. Plus there are choice shorts from Lloyd Hamilton (Breezing Along), Harold Lloyd (Don't Shove) and brother Gaylord (Dodge Your Debts), Billy Bevan (Be Reasonable), Louise Fazenda (Faro Nell) and many others. I give Gravy full credit for talking me into buying this--it's great stuff! |

I think David Kalat is just pissed at me because I wrote a few unkind things about him on my weblog. That's why the Chase set has been pulled. |

I guess the set is completely done and ready to go to press, but they're just holding off. Doesn't make much sense to me, but what do I know. Could be more than a year if the wait is for the economy to improve. |
