In a dirty world where the only things that matter are getting high, getting drunk, and/or getting laid, meet Simon Grim, a quiet garbageman who wants to avoid being beaten up and to convince people he's not retarded (to which the typical response is, "If you say so"). Along comes Henry Fool, a would-be novelist with a checkered past (to say the least), to romance Simon's sister (well, what passes for romance these days) and convince Simon he has the talent to be a great poet. One o' them quirky-type independent films, and it shares the same positives and negatives as most of them: alternately funny and pretentious, and too long 'cause nobody wants to edit a movie that costs real money to make. In this case, blame and/or credit Hal Hartley, who wrote, produced, and directed it, and probably played one of the Asian teenage girls in the donut shop, too. Don't think I didn't like it though; I appreciate it for what it is, for what it accomplishes, and most of all, 'cause Fay Grim is portrayed by Parker Posey, and the worst thing she's ever done is still worth seeing. Oh, wait, I forgot she was in that recent Superman movie. Okay, everything except that. And this is far from her worst film; in fact, it's highly enjoyable, although from time to time too ugly for a movie that bills itself on the DVD cover as "Hilarious!" Thomas Jay Ryan is Henry, James Urbaniak is Simon. They're both good, particularly Urbaniak. There was a belated sequel called Fay Grim, released only last year. I have it but haven't gotten to it yet. The DVD is fine, but contains no bonus material, not even a stinkin' trailer. |

My friend and Love Angel just reminded me that Urbaniak plays the sinister Monarch on the Venture Bros., her fave TV show. |
