I while ago, I picked up a book called "A Century of Cinema in Sacramento 1900-2000" by Andrew Flink (Yes, Andrew Flink!) but I never had much of a chance to look through it. Some fascinating pics and ads and I'm gonna try 'n' contact him and see if I can copy some of it for the Balcony. Meanwhile, the pics of marquees and the movie newspaper ads are fascinating. How'd you like to go see a double feature of "The Wicked Lady" with James Mason (not in the title role, I hope) and "Crime Doctor's Manhunt"? I know I would.

Here's an ad for what I assume was a locally-owned chain, all with kiddie matinees for only 14 cents per ticket(!).

Tower: Double feature of "Rio Grande" (Sunset Carson) and "Hills of Oklahoma" (Rex Allen) plus ch. 9 of "Ghost of Zorro".

Del Paso: "Rollin' down the Great Divide" (Hopalong Cassidy), "Code of the Silver Sage" (Allan Lane) and ch. 5 of "Flying Disc Man from Mars".

Grand: "The Golden Stallion" (Roy Rogers), 10 color cartoons, and ch. 1 of "Overland with Kit Carson"

Man, now THAT is entertainment.

Me, too... Based on when some of the films were released, this was probably from the fall of 1950, although most of the features were anywhere from a year to 8 years old and that Kit Carson serial was originally released in 1939. Hell, for 14 cents, what d'yer want, kids? Cinemascope?

In case you're wondering, the Del Paso closed in 1970, the building burned to the ground in 1990, and all that's left is a very beautiful terazzo sidewalk that says DEL PASO standing in front of a vacant lot.

The Grand still stands, but hasn't been a movie theatre since 1960. I think it's a church now.

The Tower, I'm happy to say, is still around and still a movie theatre, although it's been split into 3 screens and the days of Rex Allen pictures are long gone. It's an arthouse these days, and you'll find me in attendance several times a year. Current offerings are Happy-Go-Lucky, Rachel Getting Married, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. They don't show older "classic" films, the only art house I know of that never does.
