My late father was born & raised in Northern Ireland on July 19, 1914. He passed away Jan. 12, 2007 in his 93rd year. He came to Canada on his own in 1929. We both loved western films. Dad pushed me down town in my wheelchair to the Roxy Theatre on many Saturday afternoons to catch the 2:00 p.m. matinee. We didn't have a car until I was about 9. The kind hearted theatre manager never charged my Dad or my myself any admittance fee. We only had to pay for whatever we wanted at the confection booth. I really enjoyed the Saturday afternoons we spent to-gether. My Dad's Silver Screen Sagebrush Heroes were William S. Hart & Tom Mix. I have 2 films of each of these early western stars. How many of Tom Mix's sound films including "Dick Turpin" are available on DVD-R for viewing? I have "The Miracle Rider" on DVD from VCI. I believe there are a total of 9 sound films. I'd like to get good quality prints of these films. Any Balconeers out there with any ideas as to who I could contact? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. |

At one time I purchased 3 or 4 Tom Mix talkies from Captain Bijou on VHS. Can't remember the titles of all... MY PAL, THE KING (w/Mickey Rooney) and DESTRY RIDES AGAIN were two of them. Have you tried VCI? I thought I'd seen some Mix titles listed there but I might be mistaken. I know that the Mix talkies are considered inferior to the silents by aesthetes, but I really enjoyed the ones I found. Tom Mix and Buck Jones are two of my favorite cowboy stars. If you don't mind dubs, I can try and find my copies upstairs and make you dupes of those on VHS. |

I have only seen one Tom Mix vehicle, THE MIRACLE RIDER, and loved it. I can see why he is a popular star. I, too, would love to see more of his silent and talkie work. |

All 9 of Mix's Universal westerns are available. I have all nine, all are excellent quality. Riders of Death Valley is the best. My Pal , the King the weakest. Try Comet Video and/or Ranger Video. |

I have all the sound movies on DVD. The quality isn't bad at all but finding "restored" prints is not likely. Just have to find a good print. Some of mine are direct 16 mm transfers, others from VHS from years ago when I transferred. They are okay, nothing spectacular. Beware that DESTRY RIDES AGAIN was retitled at one time so you don't want to get two of the same film! |
