Filmed in 1939, City In Darkness, is about a smuggling ring attempting to smuggle an arms shipment out of France to the enemy. The city is expecting to be bombed by Germany any minute and the title of the movie comes from the ensuing citywide blackout. The head of the smuggling ring is found dead, with his safe cleaned out and Charlie “just happens” to be visiting police headquarters when the murder is discovered. Although purported to be filmed for propaganda purposes and breaking away from the tried and true “Charlie Chan formula,” I found this film to be just as enjoyable as the rest of the series except for Harold Huber’s obnoxious portrayal of the police inspector trainee as the comic relief, instead of one of Charlie’s sons. Huber was so irritating, he ruined an otherwise enjoyable movie for me. I found it curiously coincidental that a movie called City In Darkness should take place in Paris, “The City of Lights.”
Not plane, nor bird, nor even frog. It's just little ol' me...
