Sadly, I haven't been able to locate a full-sized copy or original of the 1-sheet for this serial to hang in the ol' FNF room... It's a corker...

...we're going to watch MYSTERIOUS ISLAND for our next serial, we'll see chapter one on Friday, January 30, and chapter two on February 6, which means I won't be able to get it posted until a few days after that and then we'll do it every week.
I ordered this from Rodney yesterday, so I can sing-along!
Rodney's jernt is having a sale this month.....3 for 20 bucks on serials.

His print is excellent. Incidentally, when I started collecting serials this one had a lousy rep and was thought lost, which made me sad at the time. Since then at least two prints have surfaced, one excellent, and the serial's reputation keeps improving, especially with people like me who prefer their movies silly.

Rodney's website is:

http://oldtimeradiotapes.homestead.com/rodneyhome.html

It is listed in the "Links Section" of Gravy's fine site.

I just ordered mine from Rodney, along with The Shadow & Mysterious Doctor Satan, both of which I've been wanting to see for a long time.

That's cool, but don't forget his Thelma Todd set, which I'm ordering today.

He has some other good, rare serials: in reverse chronology, Cody of the Pony Express, Ghost of Zorro, Pirate Treasure, Phantom of the Air, Mystery of the Double Cross...

I gotta say, I kind of like seeing this thread take a turn for the praise of my company! If it weren't for my fellow balconeers, January would've been a very slow month (as they've all been lately). I really appreciate it, and hope to continue to do you right with good stuff at fair prices.

I started watching Mysterious Island a couple of weeks ago. I am up to chapter 8 by now...going against Gravy's established rule of only one chapter per week.

Am I missing something or is this the first serial that does not have a really defined villain? You have the volcano people, the Mercurians and the wild man none of whom seem to be out for world domination, water rights, right of way for the railroad...you get the idea. They all seem to just be on the island. What am I missing?

Then you have Captain Harding and his crew that seem to be bumping into each group for no apparent reason.

But then in most serials a lot of things happen for no apparent reason.

Where is Buster Crabbe? The theme music is from The Sea Hound and Pirates of the High Seas and maybe several more Columbia serials that I don't remember. There are at least half dozen actors in Mysterious Island that are also from the two Buster Crabbe serials.

Oh, by the way Rodney you will hearing from tomorrow. I want to get in on the January sale.

We watched the final episode of Cap'n Marvel and then followed that with the first episode of Mysterious Island. The FNF gang thought the latter was quite a hoot, particularly (in order):

* The Yankee POWs who are allowed to roam free around the streets of Richmond.
* The Yankee captain living in a house that appears to be Beaver Cleaver's home, newly relocated so that it's on the middle of a golf course.
* What was quickly nicknamed the "Flying Thimble from Outer Space".
* Everything else.

I have to agree with you Gravy on that house. I didn't think of the Beaver I thought of the Ozzie and Harriett.

Isn't that "Flying Thimble" from either Hop Harrigan or Brick Bradford? It seems to me that I have seen it somewhere before.

Single biggest laugh of the episode: a Civil War POW, upon hearing of the plan to escape in a hot-air balloon, says, "That's SWELL!"

I watched the 1st chapter last night. Along with all the other zaniness, the Yanks riding on horseback are spotted by Confederate soldiers in the hot air balloon, yet the Yanks never see the balloon way up there in the sky. There's a quick glimpse of Gene Roth's pirate flag, and it IS intimidating. Zaniness I tells ya.
