Bernard Shaw said something like this:
"The hack borrows. The artist steals."

Point being, the artist doesn't leave enough to be recognized as borrowed. Star Wars (the first and best one) rounded up generations of cliches and nailed them together into something surprising.

Just so everybody's on the same page as Mort and me --

Minna Gombell was near 40 when she started in Hollywood in the early talkies. With few exceptions (like Ruth Chatterton), actresses that age couldn't be leading ladies in Hollywood, so they became character actors, playing older best friends and/or mothers. The really good ones practically stole the films they were in. Minna Gombell was one of those. I think she was a knockout, but to me, college girls look like infants.

Gombell did her best work with Frank Borzage, often dominating the films she played in.

As for Star Wars being art, um, I guess I better remember what Mama said -- it's better to shut up and let people think you might be dumb than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Hmmm, I'll have to check it out!!

When I think of Minna, I think of Mimi in THE THIN MAN ("We HAVE to have money") & Mrs. Hardy in BLOCKHEADS. The quintessential super-bitch.

Good little actress... & I l-u-u-u-v that name
