TCM showed this set this month and I thought it to be a great companion set for MGM's That's Entertainment box set, which is one of my all time favorite box sets. It's apparently a TV mini-series that ran in 1992 and the rest of you have probably already seen it. While That's Entertainment dealt with only the MGM musicals, When The Lion Roars deals with the whole history of the studio, from the time Leow's consolidated several studios to form MGM. This collection documents the studio politics, love stories, stars, directors and generally the rest of the MGM story, besides their great musicals. There are three discs and each deals with a different period of time in their history. On the last disc, I was sorry to learn the once magnificent studio nearly met it's demise at the hands of a corporate raider who sold off all of it's assets, but again, I'm sure most of you knew that.

I 've seen other studio's history DVDs advertised and I'd be very interested in seeing them too, if they're anywhere near as entertaining and informative as this set is. Any recommendations?

Another good studio doc is THE REPUBLIC PICTURES STORY, Chandy.

Thanks Bats, I'll look for that one. I've seen the TCM Warner Brothers gangster story, which seemed more like a Cagney/Bogart commercial to me. Anyone seen The Universal or Monogram stories? It seems to me I've seen such critters advertised somewhere.
