I just re-watched this for the first time since I was 17. Turns out I was too young to understand it then. It's not meant for young people, but for people with some experience of life & love. Apparently I confused it in my memory with Jean Renoir's Partie de Compangne.

Its three tales come from short stories by Guy de Maupassant, all of which hint that you can't use the opposite sex without doing damage. The first story concerns an old roué who has always mistreated his wife; the second is a light tale about a madam who closes her brothel and takes the girls to the country to attend her niece's first communion; and the third is about a painter who courts a model with tragic consequences. The whole thing leaves you with a bittersweet feeling of love and loss: de Maupassant's Gallic view of life overlaid with Ophuls' Viennese sense of the ephemeral nature of happiness, with the camera always prowling around the gorgeous sets, but so skilfully that you rarely even notice.

I've never seen a bad Ophuls picture, and this one's nearly his best. Strong stuff.

Thanks for the review, Mr. P. I did pick this one (and La Ronde) up, so I will definitely be putting Le Plaisir to the top of my viewing pile for this weekend.

My excuse is I've been on the road for a couple of weeks and am a bit disoriented. Enjoy your weekend, Mr. B.

No worries, Mr P. We are all human, once in a while.

And proving my own post, I discovered I don't have Le Plaisir or La Ronde. Yet. I do, however, have them on order with my local DVD supplier and should receive them soon. Will report back then.
