Charles I's son in France, an athlete and a swordsman, trying to elude the deadly roundheads so he can become Charles II: one of my all-time favorite movies, finally coming to home video March 15. This is one movie that truly has it all: Fairbanks, Jr., is a dashing hero; Henry Daniell is a bone-chilling Cromwellian creepo; Maria Montez is gorgeous as ever and reads her lines peculiarly, which is why I love her; excitement galore, fists, swords, suspense and Max Ophuls' opulent direction, with the camera relentlessly prowling the French countryside. Great sets and costumes are a given with Max's name on the package. Have a treat and learn about one of the great directors the fun way.

There's a page up at Amazon.com. Just search Max Ophuls (you'll find another cool thing if you're an Ophuls fan). The price is right too.

Yayyyyyyyy!!!!!!

I went to Amazon, Mr. P, but I didn't notice this other cool thing.

Could ya be a little more specific?

It's an early Thirties film of Smetana's Bartered Bride, restored with a disc of extras. If it's not on Canada Amazon you'll find it on USA Amazon.

I must be blind-as-a-bat, I can't find a 2-disc version on Amazon US.

It's listed under the German title: Die Verkaufte Braut. I just ordered it so let me see if it's any good. I never was a big fan of the opera so it might be a little too special to be fun.

OK, here it is: don't waste your money. Of all the Ophuls pictures I've seen, The Bartered Bride is by far the least interesting. Ophuls was all about film technique, and the early Thirties didn't offer many opportunities for a guy like that. Put it another way, Max ain't Max without his tracks, and there's not a single tracking shot in this picture. Only recommended to fans of early German musicals or operetta fans, if there are any.

It put me right to sleep, and is recommended for that purpose only.

I'm not. Thanks for the review and saving me some cash, Mr. P.

Sadly, I received notice today from Amazon that "The Exile" release has been cancelled.

I was really looking forward to finally seeing this.
