An unhappy little girl finds a secret door in her new (very old) house, and behind it lies her "other" family, willing to make her every wish come true. Things are not what they seem through that doorway in this stop-motion film. "Beware the guys with button eyes!" should've been the tagline for this one; it's the most terrifying children's picture ever made, and I know what I'm talking about. It's creative and clever and visually arresting, but so was Pan's Labyrinth, a film which also had depth (and a much better script). This isn't a bad film and technically it's very impressive but it's padded and there is no warmth in it. |

I wanted to cut it some slack because it is stylish and shows craftsmanship, but I didn't enjoy it very much and was glad when it was over. Of these stop-motion "family" pics that began with The Nightmare Before Christmas way back in 1993 (yep, it's been that long), the ONLY one I enjoyed was James and the Giant Peach. God Bless Roald Dahl. BTW, I saw the 3D version of Coraline, and the effects were nothing worth mentioning. I want hot wax oozing on my lap, a paddleball in the face, or the Creature's claw an inch from my nose, damn it. |
