Liam Neeson has to go get his spoiled brat daughter back who is seventeen but acts like she's seven after she lies to him about a trip to Europe with her equally flaky friend. I'm not sure I'd let these two go to Radio Shack without adult supervision but because ex-wifee and her rich husband are sort of billion dollar hippees they convince Neeson to let her go. She's not in Paris for more than four minutes when trouble starts and she's abducted by some stereotypically bad Albanian sex slave mobsters. This ain't rocket science, and it's not Oscar material (although that's not necessarily a bad thing) but what it is amounts to two hours of slam bang in your face action like a more realistic James Bond movie without the dopey Bond girls getting in the way. Neeson is a guy's action hero with the acting chops to make what could have been another lame Steven Seagal movie something a LOT better. Nice to see in this age of Everybody Loves Raymond Dad's who are basically idiots that this is a dad who is A. Right B. Tough C. Doesn't get pushed around. As much as I love and appreciate movies like Casablanca-- and I even enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire-- this was the right scratch for my itch to just see someone on the loose. In the vein of the almost as terrific RONIN with Robert DeNiro. Something about the middle aged guy as action hero just appeals to me. Hmm. |
