So, I've got Paula Dean on the Food Network going on in the background as I perform other tasks... and I hear her mention recipes from The Brown Derby. I immediately drop everything & run to face the TV. Sure enough, here was Paula making some grapefruit cake and it definitely looked yummy!!

Reminded me of the time I was down in Orlando. Went to what was then called MGM Studios (I think they've changed the name). They had a replica of the late, lamented Derby & I went in to sample thier wares. I innocently asked if they had Grapefruit Cake. The waitress looked at me in surprise and said, "Of course." They did & it was pretty much what I remembered it to be.

Unfortunately, I can't eat grapefruit now as it's supposed to negate the effects of my cholesterol medication. Bummer!!

Believe it or not, there was a Brown Derby in Akron, Ohio, when I was living there. I never went though.

Anyone watch Sandra Lee?? Probably not... unless you're roughly my age. If you are, her show is like a time machine back to the fifties.

She makes some of the same goofy things my Mom made. Course, Mom didn't have a rack like Sandra's... but then a lotta people claim that that's something of a recent addition.

What really amuses me are the elaborate table-scapes she sets. Shades of Mom's old bridge parties

Does Sandra Lee do the "semi-homemade" show? That one cracks me up. It has "semi homemade" recipes like twinkies with chocolate syrup on them.

The chicken pot pie recipe that is featured on Down Home With The Neelys is fantastic.

That's the one. I'd swear she uses a Good Housekeeping magazine from 1954 for the majority of her recipes.

Do ya get the feeling that she consumes all of the drink she prepares at the end of the program... which serves four.

Just checked her out on the tube. Must be an old program. Doesn't look as "big" as she has on the recent ones!!

Sheeeesh, Stony, that picture is too damn small for an old fart like me (where's my magnifying glass).

Anyhoo, kinda looks like her. She's in her mid-40's. Not sure if she's had a face-job, but pretty sure she's had her boobies enhanced.

At any rate, I wouldn't go into the water with her. She makes Jaws look like a goldfish... & she could probably drink the two of us under her decorated table!!

Well mort, as long as you can find your, rocks, highball, martini and wine glasses, I presume you'll be fine.

Ina Garten! I’m at a loss to describe her charm (or whatever the hell it is), but every time she comes on, I’m loathe to turn her off. Yep, guess I’m hooked.

Some of the unique aspects of her show:
1) All the men dress like we used to dress at USC back in the late fifties. It was called Ivy League then. Don’t know what it’s called now (probably still called Ivy League).
2) All Ina’s male friends seem to be gay. I’ve even had my doubts about her husband.
3) Ina seems to be the only cook on The Cooking Channel who’s actually built like she enjoys the food she prepares.
4) My son & I love to imitate her semi-monotone speech patterns.
5) Don’t know where she lives, but it definitely looks idyllic (obviously near the water).
6) Probably because of where she lives, she prepares way too much seafood for my taste.
7) She frequently re-visits old recipes of hers that she decides to “jazz-up” (or whatever she calls it). This frequently means adding more of what made the dish fattening to begin with.

Ina’s definitely entertaining, BUT she sure doesn’t help me in my quest to reduce my current girth!!

Hokay, I’m REALLY in the minority on this one. I find middle-aged guys desperately trying to look (& act) “hip”, woefully pathetic... & Guy Fieri definitely fits that description with his spiked hair, tattoos & earring(s) (not sure whether that’s plural or not). However, this guy may very well be the most popular host on the Food Network… and his friends & family say he’s the greatest “guy” in the world. So, who am I to argue.

I just read somewhere that his “Diners, Drive-ins & Dives” is the networks’ most-watched program… & I can certainly see why. Let’s face it, food that’s bad for us is usually just exactly what we really want to ingest… & Guy is the perfect host. I think his build helps his credibility. He looks like he exists on the same food he’s extolling. And he’s a game guy. He’ll wince & then try some food that he normally hates (I think it’s eggs that particularly turn him off). At any rate, his enthusiasm is catching… plus he gets behind the counter & really gets into the food preparation.

WARNING: Just watching this program may add 5 pounds to your weight… to say nothing of what it will do to your cholesterol level.

I agree with your assessment, Mort. I think the thing that makes his show so appealing, besides the things you've already mentioned, is that he seems to genuinely enjoy finding these places and trying new things, or finding a new twist on something he already likes.
