I noticed among Warner's new Archive collection is Doc Savage, the 1970s flick with Ron Ely. Having read some of the pulp story reprints recently I was wondering if was a good movie and has anyone bought it and if so is the quality good? Thanks in advance.

There are definitely two questions and two answers there, M.

The first is the quality of the film, which is poor, which is to say the flick is pretty awful. Imagine a camp version of Doc Savage, in the vein of the 60s Batman TV series, minus any of the wit and/or humour. Plus a villain with serious mommy issues.

The second question relates to the quality of the DVD release. If you read the last paragraph, it doesn't matter.

Save your money.

Agree with Batman on all points. Doc Savage is a mind-numbing misfire.

Sure hope the consortium who purchased the rights to make new films based on the Street and Smith characters do it right this time. First up, The Shadow, then Doc Savage.

One can only hope, BT.

The main thing is to keep them in their times: Doc Savage the 1920s to 1930s, The Shadow the 1930s to 1940s, etc.

The Doc stories have enough retro-science fiction to please the sfx set; so, there is hope. I fear that we are more likely to see a Shadow who becomes invisible than the gun-wielding Shadow of the pulps. The last Shadow movie tried to mix the two and became neither fish nor fowl.

A Doc Savage movie might work if it is casted right. As for The Shadow, I would have more hope if Sam Raimi wasn't attached. The last Spider-Man movie was terrible and I feel he has lost whatever talent he had working on this series.

Agreed, M.

Raimi went from one of the best (if not the best) super-hero movies ever, with Spider-man 2, to one of the most disappointing in Spider-man 3.

Actually, the main thing is to separate the Shadow of the pulps with the Shadow of the radio.

They have to keep Margo Lane out of it and concentrate more on his agents and not to the point where they use so many that they're tripping over each others' feet.

I would like like to see them use Burbank, Harry Vincent, Cliff Marsland, Rutledge Mann, Shrevy, and perhaps Hawkeye.

If and when they do a sequal they can use some others.

It seems that Doc Savage for the most part used ALL of his men in almost every adventure.

Having finally just read my first two Shadow novels, ever, I must agree with Grimy's assessment. Keep Margo Lane out, and the agents in. Especially Harry Vincent, Hawkeye and Burbank.

As I mentioned on another thread I ordered the Doc Savage DVD, along with the 5 Lex Barker Tarzans. It's been over a week since I placed my order (after having to wait three days to place the order due to WB website issues) and the order is still "Processing". WB seems to have no sense of urgency in pleasing their potential customer base for their archive titles. If they ever arrive I will let everyone know what the DVD quality is. I'm especially curious about the Tarzans. On the website it clearly warns on the Doc Savage title that the image is culled form the best available sources, and has not been restored in any way.

Meh, that probably means a VHS Pan & Scan version of the film. Which, in this case, cannot make the movie any worse. Still...$20 plus shipping for a pan & scan in this day and age is unacceptable.

Doc Savage is a widescreen anamorphic print. In fact so far all the films are in their OAR (original aspect ratio). It is a decent print as are all the other Warner Archive titles I've ordered.

Actually, Marlin, as good as that news is, for the other movies Warner is offering in the archive; in the case of DOC SAVAGE it just means more of a bad movie.
