In the summer of 1987, a passel of recent high school grads suffer a last summer together at an amusement park in Pittsburgh. Will any of them find love? Particularly, with virginal, daffy-sweet James (Jessie Eisenberg), the nicest kid in the park, find it with Em (Kristen Stewart), the brainiest girl in town but sadly victimized by a viciously bad personal life? A good little movie, not as funny as it looked but sweeter than I expected and the music soundtrack reminded me just how bad music could be in the 1980s (what is UP with "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House? That band makes Air Supply sound like friggin' Metallica!"). |

Actually, they're recent college grads. James is saving up for grad school, and you may have noticed that he has no trouble getting served in the local bar. I think I liked the film even more than you did, Mr. Gravy. It's my favorite movie that I've seen thus far this year. The studio is trying to play a bait and switch by advertising the film as "From the director of SUPERBAD," hoping to lure teens looking for the latest raunchy, "R"-rated comedy. While I thought SUPERBAD was excellent in its own right, ADVENTURELAND is a different kind of film entirely. It has the sweetness of the previous film without the raunch. In reality, it's a coming-of-age film with laughs and music. It's much closer in feel to ALMOST FAMOUS than SUPERBAD. After getting home, my wife told me, "I wouldn't mind having that one eventually on DVD." I agree. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. |

A few weeks ago I saw a preview for Adventureland and thought it looked like it could be good. I also saw previews for Observe and report: a film that looked like it could make me laugh. I also saw a preview for Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards: a WWII film with Brad Pitt recruiting 10 men to go out and torture and kill so many Nazis each. Although no action scenes were shown, just the recruitment, it looks promising, and I'm sure Tarantino may go over the top with some of the action. |

Just a word of warning--From what I hear, OBSERVE AND REPORT may not be everyone's cup of tea. It's a pitch black, very violent comedy about a sociopath. It has been described (repeatedly) as TAXI DRIVER with jokes. I've not been a fan of director/writer Jody Hill's previous work, THE FOOT FIST WAY and the HBO series EAST BOUND AND DOWN, which have also been dark comedies about sociopaths. I'm a fan of dark comedy (THE KING OF COMEDY is my favorite Scorsese film), but Hill's work so far has been sub-par both in terms of direction and jokes. That said, I'll probably give OBSERVE AND REPORT a try. The film has split critics dramatically (it's currently at 51% on Rotten Tomatoes scale), but it has garnered more positive reviews than Hill's previous work, and Seth Rogen has been singled out for praise for his brave, dark performance in the worst of the reviews. Still, I'd suggest that if you are easily shocked or disgusted, stay far away from this film. On the other hand, I've heard nothing but positive word of mouth about Tarantino's new film. Although, so far most of that word of mouth has only come from those that have read the shooting script. The film I'm most looking forward to is THE BROTHERS BLOOM, a con man comedy from the director of BRICK. It's been garnering great early reviews, described as THE STING meets THE ROYAL TENNENBAUMS. The trailer is a lot of fun too: Trailer: THE BROTHERS BLOOM |

I'm versatile and sometimes sick-minded, so the film won't bother me, I just hope the funny scenes weren't the ones which were shown as the preview. I hate when that happens. |

Inglorious Bastards is a remake of a schlocky but fairly fun '70s film starring Bo Svensen. The original is available on DVD. |

Let's hope so. I love dark comedy and am hoping this one is along the lines of the underrated and very dark, THE CABLE GUY. |

I loved this movie, and unlike Gravy, loved the soundtrack. Then again, The Cure is my favorite band of all time.

Robert Smith does rule the universe. I thought I was the only one who knew that. |
