James Bond battles a psychopath intent on cornering the world's silicon chip market by destroying silicon valley.

I saw this movie 24 years ago, and all I remembered about it was "Damn, Roger Moore is WAY too old to play James Bond." I was right. He was 58, at least 20 years too old (he was in his mid-40s when he assumed the role from Connery). In any case, this was the one and only 007 film Kid Gravy hadn't seen, so in best father-son tradition, we sat down to watch it tonight. He started bitching during the title song (by Duran Duran, remember them? Pro'lly not) and pretty soon just said "Ewwww" whenever Moore sucked face with some actress 30 years younger and "Scary!" whenever Grace Jones appeared at the terrifying ebon assassin May Day. Christopher Walken does what he can with the thankless role of Max Zorin, the nuttsy-cookoo villain, which isn't much. It's a total patchwork job, with sequences lifted from For Your Eyes Only, Live and Let Die, Diamonds are Forever, and Goldfinger. Hell, I'm pretty certain the runaway fire engine sequence was stolen from W.C. Fields' Never Give a Sucker an Even Break. Lame. Oh, and the Bond girls? Tanya Roberts and some other rather pretty blondes who can't act, even by Bond girl standards. Just disappointing all 'way round. Bring on Timothy Dalton, boys, we need him.

Done! See how easy I am to get along with? BTW, doing some followup to last night's viewing, I note that Roger Moore considered this his latest favorite of the 7 he did; at some point in the filming, he met his leading lady's mother, who was younger than he was, and that depressed him. Also, he and Miss Jones hated each other, as you can tell in their rather grisly love scene.

This is one of my least favorite Bond films for many of the reasons LG sited.

One source of tension between Grace Jones and Roger Moore was when during a press junket to promote the film, she said Roger Moore was too old to be Bond. She said they should have hired her boyfriend (Dolph Lundgren). Well, I agree with the first part if not the second.

This is my guilty pleasure among the Bonds. I know it's not that good, and I should think of it as near the bottom of the series, but I enjoy it. I can't explain it or understand it. I'm n ot saying it's Goldfinger or even Octopussy, but I enjoy watching it.

Quite right, Witney - it has its moments and it's good to see Patrick Macnee.

The bridge is very high and it's a primo spot for suicides. I saw a documentary called The Bridge, and the filmmaker recorded the bridge over a span of time, filming people plunging to their deaths. One guy who was interviewed said he decided he wanted to live on his way down. He did live, but he was badly hurt from hitting the water. As for the Bond movie: I saw it at the theater during it's original run and haven't cared to see it again. Roger Moore as Bond has that effect on me!

Not as good as OCTOPUSSY? Wow, that is a bad movie.

Actually, I have seen both, but remember little of either.

There's not much to remember in either.

I've never seen a Bond film I couldn't enjoy on some level. Some were good; some were so bad they were good; and some just had an occasional moment so silly or so over the top that I enjoyed it. I'm no fan of the Moore Bonds, but I can even get something out of them, especially for reasons I will probably never be able to explain, "Live and Let Die".

I'd venture to guess that it's subconsciencly the Bond Girls!

I am trying to think if I have a "guilty pleasure" Bond movie and I can't think of one. I know some people take a dim view, though, of Diamonds are Forever, which I think is one of the best ones. I don't like Thunderball very much, which I guess is the reverse of a "guilty pleasure", right?

What I DID think of was a terrible, laughless 007 parody film called Spy Hard, which starred Leslie Nielsen in his "The joke of me being a comic actor when I was always a dramatic actor has long since fallen flat" phase. What WAS funny were the opening credits - an hilarious parody of James Bond opening credits, performed by Weird Al Yankovic. Rent the movie, watch the opening, then turn it off.
