John Carter from Mars getting a movie

I came across this while surfing around but a film version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' space hero is now being directed by Andrew Stanton, who directed Wall-E and is being written by Michael Chabon, who wrote the Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. While I would love to see John Carter leap to the big screen I'm a little worried about the talent. Wall-E was great, but Stanton hasn't directed a live action film before ( I assume it's live action. There wasn't any info it was being animated.) Also while I liked Chabon's earlier work, I found Kavalier uneven and his latest work as a novelist dreadful, plus the fact that his screenwriting credits only consist of Spider-Man 2 and the unmade Kavalier movie. Any thoughts on this or who you would like to see bring this project to life.

Chabon's screenwriting credits include Spider-Man 2

I would love to see a live-action film of John Carter. I am familiar with the name Michael Chabon, but don't think I have read any of his work.

But, if he helped pen SPIDER-MAN 2, one of the 3 greatest super-hero films of all-time, then I am feeling a little better about this project.

My thought is, let 'em have a shot at it: these guys aren't hacks. I'm not into pre-criticism.

I'm not much into prejudging either, but let's face it, Frank Miller was wrong for The Spirit and I knew when I heard it. As for Spider-Man 2, Chabon wrote a draft that got mostly thrown out and rewritten by other writers. At one point I read he had to fight to get his name on the film. Plus I just hate the Spider-Man movies. If I want to see whiny 20 somethings I'll watch a CW series.

Hey, MCR, don't hold back, tell us how ya really feel. LOL

Seriously, thanks, I didn't know he wasn't really involved with SPIDER-MAN 2. Of course, before your first post, I didn't know he had been involved at all!

Sorry you're not a fan of the Spidey flicks. The first is really good, the second is a classic and the third is a piece of shit!

That should read piece of heck, Mr. Bat. This is a family site. Just a little suggestion. I'm not trying to popularize my silly eupheumisms or anything.

Really.

Well here's a piece of news on the movie from aintitcool.com so take it with the expected grain of salt. According to their source the movie will begin shooting this November in Utah. No word on casting except that it will be live action. Of course most of the posters there are arguing for an R rated flick but the novel doesn't lend itself to that. The most interesting piece is the many filmmakers who attempted to make it before from Bob Clampett and Harryhausen to Robert Rodriguez and the guy who directed Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Still stick by my original worries about the script and whether Andrew Stanton can transistion smoothly to live action. We'll see.

Having not read any of the source novels, I can't speak to the rating that would be required to bring JCFM to the big screen.

I am assuming some space battles and other violence, and I seem to recall the use of swords from the covers of the Marvel Comics adaptation series that I have seen, so I think you would at least need a 14A rating. I have seen PG movies with sword fights and they come off as less than convincing. I'm not bloodthirsty, but seeing someone impale someone else with a sword, then pull the sword out of the guys body and not a speck of blood, well it kind of takes you out of the movie. Reminds me of the lame sword fights on that Xena show from a decade ago.

I don't think an "R" rating would be a requirement, though.

There are also some scantily attired ladies, IIRC.

I don't think an R rating is needed either. Most of the concern (if there really is any) is that the novel does feature a scantly clad female lead (the book's real title is A Princess of Mars. Reportedly filmmakers wanted the title changed fearing someone would think its a Star Wars ripoff), some suggested sexual interaction between her and Carter and violence though it isn't any worse than in a Star Wars film. I guess they just don't want a watered down PG movie. Then again a lot of them want Matthew Mcgonaghey (I can never spell that guy's name) as Carter and Megan Fox of Transformers as the Princess. Oh vey.

I thought there was, Jazzy. Again, recalling from the comic book covers. But like M said, I wouldn't guess they are any less dressed than say Princess Leia's slave get-up in RETURN OF THE JEDI, so I don't think an "R" rating is warranted in that regard.

If that's who they are considering casting, M, you said it. :ermm:

John Carter fans might want to track down the old Beany and Cecil DVD. The bonus materials include some rough test animation for Bob Clampett's version, which was evidently planned as a series of theatrical shorts.

That's the second time that someone has mentioned that, Cliff. Thanks for the reminder. I would love to see that test animation...

Unfortunately, a quick check of Amazon tells me the DVD has been discontinued.

I am unfamiliar with Beany & Cecil, but the Amazon reviews make it sound fun, too.

Anyone have this DVD that might want to make a copy for trade?

Well now it's not Mcannoyingnamenoonecanspell. According to the Hollywood Reporter Taylor Kitsch, recently seen as Gambit in Wolverine is Carter while X-Men costar Lynn Collins is Dejah. Did Stanton not see any other movies lately if this is the best he can cough up. I guess the need for cheap stars who they can sign for sequels clause wins out again.
