The fifth and final entry in Lex Barker's tour of duty as Tarzan is 1953's Tarzan and the She Devil. Barker went out with more of a whimper than a bang in this case. The story is built around ivory poachers led by Lyra (the She Devil of the title played by Monique van Vooren) and her heavies, Vargo (Raymond Burr, perhaps best known for hangin' with Godzilla) and Fidel (Tom Conway, brother of George Sanders). They attempt to force Tarzan into gathering a herd of elephants together for them to acquire their tusks. Tarzan wants no part of their scheme so Lyra decides to head straight for Tarzan's Achile's heel, Jane (this time played by the adequate Joyce MacKenzie). Once convinced that Jane is dead (she's not, but he's convinced otherwise), Tarzan becomes a broken man, with Barker doing a reasonably convincing job of portraying jungle heartbreak. All turns out well for our apeman and the elephants but not so good for the potential poachers. Burr is deliciously malicious and Conway makes a good counterpoint of evil for him to play off of. On the whole the film is fairly pedestrian and offers the least thrills of the Barker set despite the excellent actors in villainous roles. It would be two years before Gordon Scott would take up the Lord of the Jungle's mantle in 1955's Tarzan's Hidden Jungle. I'd love to see the rest of these Tarzan's get a commercial release. As a series I would defintiely recommend the five Lex Barker Tarzans for all jungle fans, with Tarzan's Magic Fountain and Tarzan's Savage Fury being my two favorites. |

Has anyone ordered the Gordon Scott Tarzan 6 pack through the Archive yet? I've read that they will be anamorphically enhanced, but would like to know for sure before dealing with the horrendous pain that is the Warner Archive again. I defintely want to add these titles to my collection. |

Just received them . Tarzan's Hidden Jungle is full screen. The rest are anamorphic. Hidden Jungle is the first and was most likely shot in full screen. |

Thanks Marlin. That's great to know. Yes, Tarzan's Hidden Jungle was shot in 1.37:1 even though it has a 1955 release date. So it sounds like they are all in the proper ratio. When you get a chance to watch any of them please let us know how the picture quality is. |

Just watched Tarzan's Hidden Jungle and the picture quality is fine. However I am very much disappointed. The aspect ratio appears off with black bars on each side of the picture. I took a quick peek at Tarzan and the Lost Safari. The aspect ratio appears fine and the print quality appears OK. But I didn't watch enough to really judge the quality of the colors. |

Not sure what you mean by the 3rd volume of Tarzans. Both the Lex Barker and Gordon Scott Tarzans are available from Warner Archive as MOD (manufactured on demand) DVD-Rs. http://www.wbshop.com/Warner-Archive/ARCHIVE,default,sc.html |

I just watched two of the Lex Barkers. TARZAN'S MAGIC FOUNTAIN and TARZAN AND THE SLAVE GIRL. No complaints. I will order the other three or four when I place my next order with WB. Would be nice if someone can update us all with their promo codes. I keep missing some of them. |

A friend of mine told me a recent special offered 33% off the retail price plus free postage. Anyone have the code? I'd like to order the remaining TARZANs, a few westerns and a few films I keep missing when they air them on TCM. |

O.K., shelbyvinje here are some WB Archive codes: (Free postage usually kicks in with an order over $60.00 but there is a promotion going on now, for free postage on orders over $30.00, which I don't believe has a code. The old code was: SHIP30) XB1C92 is a 20% off code (I used this on the Gordon Scott set when I ordered it last week, but it didn't work on the Scott set when I tested these codes last night. But you could try it. The code still worked on five regular titles.) REWARD25 is a 25% off code which works on five regular titles in an order. But may only work on four if you are ordering an already discounted item like Joe McDoakes. It didn't work on the Gordon Scott set. ARCHIVE10 is a 10% off code and it did work on the Gordon Scott Tarzan bundle during my test. CABINWB is a $5.00 off code for orders over $50.00. You can "stack" all these codes in an order to get the best deal. For example you could use ARCHIVE10 on the Scott set, REWARD25 for five regular titles and CABINWB. If you order five more titles in the same order, XB1C92 would take off 20% off those five and the already applied ARCHIVE10 would take 10% off four more extra titles. But the best deal is REWARD25 and CABINWB on a five title order and test the other codes on any value pack bundles you may want to include. |
