Carla was at the Halloween edition of Hollywood Heritage last year. Sure hope she makes it this year as she will have just celebrated her 100th birthday!!

In the tribute above, they shoulda included her dance footage from THE ADVENTURES OF FRANK MERRIWELL:

YAY, the Hollywood Heritage series will re-start on Oct. 14th... with a program on the Selig Polyscope studio.

The building which housed this studio is about 1/2 dozen blocks down the hill from where I live. For years, it was utilized as storage for some legitimate theatre's (don't remember which one) sets & props. It's now a U-Stor.

I always eat at Musso and Frank's when I'm in the city. Besides the steak, they do wonderful offal (oh, I'm sooo cute!), and their oysters are great too. Some splendiferous antique waiters as well. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife, and thinking about all the legendary people who regularly ate there is a real thrill. It ought to be on the National Register of Historic Places.

They also have some of the oldest waiters in captivity. One of them was so obnoxious, we once asked the host to make sure we weren't assigned to a table serviced by him. The host replied, "A lot of people make that request." BUT, the waiter was never fired. Love it!!!

It's such a great joint, and when I'm there I always think about William Faulkner and Howard Hawks chewing the fat in the booth right behind me.

Stony, your memory continues to amaze.

However, some of your current vices may come back to haunt you in that department later.

Speakin' from experience!!! On the other hand, a lady I know continuously takes me to task on this. When I blame forgetting on my advanced age, she says, "Crap, you never could remember anything, anyway."

As Steven Wright once said, "Women! Can't live with 'em. Can't shoot 'em!!"

You know how it is. I don't impress myself, or think that I have uncanny memory skills. I can't even remember the name of that Hitchcock movie I love so much, the one with Teresa Wright and Hume Cronyn.

Last nite was the first presentation of the new season (a season starts when the Hollywood Bowl season ends… ‘cause the building is smack in the middle of one of the Bowl’s smaller parking lots). The subject was “Edendale – the Hollywood before Hollywood.” I was particularly interested in this because I think I live in what was Edendale. Unfortunately, the presenter couldn’t give me the current boundaries that made up Edendale. Guess I’ll have to call the Echo Park Historical Society (yes, there actually is such an animal). They probably won’t know either.

It seems that Selig Polyscope (from Chicago) came to California and after trying several locations downtown decided to build a studio on Glendale Blvd. (then named Allesandro St. The funny thing is that there still is an Allesandro St., but it ain’t Glendale Blvd). From a topographical standpoint, it wasn’t the wisest choice they coulda made as the site is on a fairly steep hill. Consequently, sets had to be built at an angle to the ground so the set would be flat.

Despite the problems associated with the land, other studios, starting a long Hollywood tradition of “follow-the-leader”, began building studios adjacent to Selig. Soon Selig was joined by the U.S. studio of French-based Pathe, Tom Mix, Bison & the Norbig rental studio.

At some point (I either shoulda taken notes… or they shoulda handed out more detailed info sheets), Selig sold the studio to Mack Sennett – Keystone. Hokay, so I just went out to Wikipedia & found that the date was 1912 (maybe). In 1917, Sennett severed relations with Keystone & was on his own.

For the next decade, Sennett flourished. In 1928, he built a new studio in (ultimately) Studio City & left Edendale for good. However, he didn’t last long at his new address. In 1933 he filed for bankruptcy. His 5 year-old studio was purchased by Nat Levine of Mascot Pictures. And, as you all probably know, this ultimately became the studios for Republic Pictures in 1935.

The presentation wasn’t bad… & the historical photos were terrific, but the geographical knowledge of the presenters was somewhat lacking… for my purposes. Another improvement they coulda made was to let us know which direction we were looking when a photo was displayed on the screen. Of course, in SoCal, this is something of a challenge as NO street goes straight north-south or east-west. Everything’s on the bias.

To tell the truth, I think most of the audience found the whole thing somewhat boring. I probably would have as well… if it hadn’t been for the fact that I’ve lived in the subject area for quite a few decades now.

Geez, Mort, wish I'd known you were there...I was there myself.

Went out to L.A. last week for the Lone Pine Film Festival and stayed a few extra days to hang out with friends in Hollyweird. Bob Birchard, who gave the presentation, is an old pal of mine.
