I have all the Charlie Chan films from a source I found on E Bay and their quality varies from fair to excellent.

My question is - I am considering doing an upgrade of the Warner Oland Films and was wondering if the new releases were remastered and improved or are they simply "fair" copies with some added features.

Thanks for your advice -

From what I saw before I fell asleep, the Warners six-pack of Chan films were all beautiful quality.

Check out your local Costco immediately. Lately I've spotted some of the Chan and Moto 4-film sets there for $20.

The Oland and first Tolar films from Fox look fantastic. More importantly, they also include a lot of extras with every film -- mostly talking heads and clips, but with a lot of substantive and surprising information. Also some commentaries, "recreations" of lost films (narration and dialogue under still photos) and a couple of feature-length oddities (a gloriously creaky melodrama with Chan in a minor role, and the Spanish-cast version of "Black Camel.")

Fox also released Mr. Moto in two boxes with equally handsome prints and extras. I must confess I enjoy the Moto films more because they seem determined to cram in as many genres as possible, including a jungle adventure straight out of a Republic serial.

The Warner box of Monogram Chans offers sharp prints, but no extras. And the films themselves are, well, Monograms.

Laughing Gravy: Have you checked out the Oland Chans or the Mr. Motos? They can hold their heads up next to the Rathbone-Bruce Sherlock Holmes series

Thank you so much- I think i will invest in the upgrades. Barnes and Noble has a 10% discount, a 10% coupon plus a 10% members discount PLUS a buy2 get one free deal going till July- I can get the first three for about $70 and not have to pay the Costco membership.

I also have the Mr Moto's from another source and the quality is fair to good- maybe i need to pop for the whole experience

Again, thanks for your insights and help
