Darn! And just when I finished transferring all of them to DVD within the past few weeks. FRANKENSTEIN 1970 was released commercially on VHS but to my knowledge, the other three were never released ever. Good news to hear! |

I've got a laser disc of You'll Find Out. Not that great a movie, really, but fun to have Lorre, Karloff and Lugosi together. |

I guess I liked You'll Find Out a little more than Vorn. Lorre/Lugosi/Karloff are a hoot in this murder mystery musical comedy. Arguably Kay Kyser's greatest film. Of course Ish Kabibble brings to mind the annoying comic sidekick of all too many B movies. |

Lorre has the best line in the film, "Why do I constantly have too outwit morons?" |

When I lived in NY, from time to time a friend or co-worker would break into a Yiddish phrase, to which my retort was always, "And Ish Kabibbles!" I dunno what that was s'posed to mean, but I like amusing myself. In any case, I like Mr. Kabibble and am looking forward to the DVD. But then, I like Frankenstein: 1970 too, so what do I know? |

Well, in general you can name anything you want. If you're naming somebody who is selling grey market copies of something that is "officially" available (or will be soon), though, you shouldn't. If you want a copy of one of the films in this set, wait for the official release, folks, in a couple of months. The quality will be worth it and the price comes to, what? $4 or $5 a film? Support official releases of vintage films. |

Watched the two Lugosi comedies last night. Zombies on Broadway was one of the few films that would have been improved by the Three Stooges. The stars felt like nightclub comics walking through an Abbott and Costello script instead of doing their own act. That said, it was low-grade, innocently offensive fun. The shock moments weren't scares, but laughs -- actual comedy being totally unexpected: Lugosi says he's working on a cure for cocoanut blight. When it's pointed out his henchman said it was banana blight, Lugosi casually tosses off "Well, he's color blind." Also had to respect Lugosi for gamely doing a slapstick routine with a monkey. You'll Find Out was on a par with the better Bob Hope films. The cringe-worthy opening presented KK and his band as God's giggling gift to comedy, but once they got to the dark old house they were actually funny, if not quite brilliant. The big problem was too much of the film was given over to musical numbers and schtick for several individual band members. I would have liked a lot more of Karloff, Lugosi and Lorre -- and I wished they could have kept us guessing a little longer instead of spelling out early on that all three were villains. |

I understand that Carney and Brown were not originally a comedy team. When Abbott and Costello hit big, suddenly every studio was trying to get a comedy team together, like MGM snapping up Laurel and Hardy when their contract finished with Hal Roach. Carney and Brown were actually both supporting comedy relief players RKO put together to be a comedy team to emulate Abbott and Costello, which didn't really work because they didn't have an actual act to play off of in their films. They did another horror comedy after Zombies On Broadway, titled Genius at Work which featured both Bela Lugosi and Lionel Atwill as mad killers. |

According to IMDb, Brown & Carney were in 12 movies together in the 1940's. Whether they acted as a team in the ones not mentioned above I don't know. They even showed up in The Absent Minded Professor and Who Was That Lady? in the 60's but probably not as a team. |

Never saw "The Walking Dead" before -- That was surprisingly good, managing to combine a clever little melodrama with genuinely intriguing ideas. The commentary was equally intriguing, tracing how a substandard zombie movie turned into something very different because of Karloff's input. "Frankenstein 1970" -- Mystery Science Theater fodder, with a weak script and small budget. Still, it's all done well enough that you can laugh at the gimmicks without cringing for Karloff and company, who all deliver what's needed. The commentary features a lot of joking around and stories along with genuinely interesting background. |
