And now, just to shake things up, I set "shuffle" to only shake up my "roots of rock & roll" selections, and it spit out: 1. Don't Drop It (Terry Fell) 2. Rockin' is our Bizness (The Treniers) 3. Ooh Baby (The Teardrops) 4. Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean (Ruth Brown) 5. Shoo Doo Be Doo (Bobby Lester & Moonlighters) 6. Rock and Roll (Wild Bill Moore) 7. My Gal Gertie (Dub Dickerson) I'll bet Mr. P. knows who all these people are. |

Gravy, I don't get it. Why don't you just listen to oldies radio? What's the difference (except of course for Miss Klein)? But yeah, I know who those people are: they ain't roots, they're the real deal. Why, why do I have to keep on 'splaining the same thing, Lucy? We all use our IPods differently, but what I do is upload stuff I never heard and then weed out what I don't like. I love to hear new music, but tons of it I delete. Needless to say I don't buy these downloads -- I borrow 'em from friends and from the library. The only downloads I ever buy are the ones I know are keepers. I didn't get the IPod at first, but now it's my little bitty buddy. |

Well, if there's a station that plays '50s and '60s music (besides the one on my satellite TV) I haven't found it, and what "oldies" stations there ARE around are more likely to play shit by Billy Joel or James Taylor than by Ruth Brown or Dub Dickerson. PLUS I ain't gonna hear Pink or Stereophonics, now, am I? In any case, I put a whole bunch of songs on my iPod that I like, so what th' heck. Not to mention I put songs I like to karaoke on my iPod. And songs from "oldies CDs" where I like a few of the songs but not others. *shrugs* |

Yeah, well, you're right I guess. What works, works, and we're all different. Lucky thing sometimes. There was this obnoxious loud guy in the U Bar today and we had to escort him to the door -- I don't want to be like him! 1.) Get Down On It -- Kool and the Gang -- a little holiday disco works for me, and I like the funky ones -- been a great Fourth so far. One of my two favorite holidays. 2.) Lester Leaps In -- Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young and Oscar Peterson. Explosive JATP tape! 3.) That's What You're Doing To Me -- The Dominoes -- REAL rock and roll, when they had saxophones. 4.) Some Kind of Wonderful -- The Drifters -- Phil Spector let people think he produced this, but it seems he really didn't. Fine record though. 5.) Psychedelic Sally -- Lionel Hampton -- probably the only record from a Benny Goodman sideman with "psychedelic" in the title. Good too. Hampton's a communicator: he recorded "Ragmop." This is a proto-funk side. 6.) Midnight Train to Georgia -- Gladys Knight and the Pips -- what can I possibly say? A song I'll never delete. 7.) Something For the Pain -- Robben Ford -- sinister song from recent album by the California blues dood -- edgy, with great guitar. |

I picked up some Cotton Picker music based on Paul's say-so and like it a lot. He's got, what, 6000 songs in his iPod? I have about 700, so my eclectic tastes aren't so well represented in there. Never heard of your groups, rod, but giggled at the name "Ass Ponys". 1. No More Mr. Nice Guy (Alice Cooper) 2. (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay (Otis Redding) 3. Yiddish Hula Boy (Janet Klein) 4. Everyone Says I Love You (Janet Klein) 5. You Know I'm No Good (Amy Winehouse) 6. Bump, Bump, Bump (B2K) 7. Some Kind of Wonderful (Grand Funk Railroad) |

Actually I'm over 7400 tunes now. Monday! 1.) Baby I'm a Fool -- Melody Gardot -- this gal is who Amy Winehouse wants to be. 2.) Hot Dog -- The Four Shells -- bizarre Stax single by white amateurs who sing in unison, imitating Elvis ... I deleted it. 3.) The Mardi Gras Song -- Davell Crawford -- nice N'Wallins groove from a descendant of Sugarboy Crawford, I bet. Fine piano. 4.) Why Baby Why? -- George Jones -- his first single, and he sounds a lot like Hank Williams. 5.) Dazz -- Brick -- disco-jazz dance music with terrific singing, flute and sax solos. Hard to listen and keep still. Five stars. 6.) Operator -- Bob Gaddy -- smooth Chicago R&B with more great piano. It's a piano day. 7.) Bugle Call Rag -- wild JATP breakdown featuring Nat King Cole with some astonishing piano. Great stuff! I'm a heppy, heppy ket! |

1.) Burning Down the House -- Talking Heads (some coincidence!) -- Parliament for white people. One of the perfect records. 2.) Use Me -- Bill Withers -- Another perfect record; a soul classic with great hook and magnificent drums. 3.) Rescue Me -- Fontella Bass -- Classic, remarkable horn section, singing, guitar solo. Good production. 4.) Bertha Butt Boogie -- Jimmy Castor Bunch -- A little something serious. 5.) Something's Coming -- Larry Kert -- Great Sondheim lyric & Bernstein tune, beautifully orchestrated, from West Side Story. 6.) Will He Wait a Little Longer -- The Stanley Brothers -- change of pace; Appalachian bluegrass at its absolute peak. 7.) Everything Happens To Me -- Billie Holiday -- My favorite record from her late period. The song could have been written for her. Love my IPod. |

1. Ohio (CSN&Y) - this song depresses me. Hey, I am a Kent State alumnus. 2. Draft Dodger Rag (Phil Ochs) - Well, now HERE'S an apt followup. 3. Drip Drop (Dion) - one of my fave songs ever by him. I love how he tells his buddy to fuck off. 4. A Little Bit More (Dr. Hook) - Ooooh! Baby-makin' music! 5. I Love L.A. (Randy Newman) - In NYC, not ALL the people look like monkeys. 6. Cherry, Cherry (Neil Diamond) - One of the few Diamond songs I like. 7. You Just May Be The One (Monkees) - Speaking of Monkees. Or Monkeys. We WERE, right? |
