Many CSN&Y songs depress me, especially "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes." I can't count the number of times that song has made me turn off the car radio. Their falsetto singing makes me want to frow up. The only group I dislike more is The Doors. 1.) Higher Ground -- Stevie Wonder -- early synthesizer exploration. Not one of his great songs, but fun. 2.) La Vie En Rose -- Tony Bennett and k.d. lang -- gem from one of the greatest albums of this decade; they made a great team. 3.) Yellow Roses -- Ry Cooder -- Beautiful steel guitar cut from the wizard who helped shape Let It Bleed. 4.) Church House Blues -- Leroy Carr (with Scrapper Blackwell on guitar) -- the piano's kinda clunky, but I love his singing. 5.) Just One of Those Things -- Ella Fitzgerald live in Berlin -- one of my favorite Cole Porter songs in a matchless performance, warts and all. ("A trip to the moon on gossermer wings...") 6.) Tore Down -- Freddie King -- Simply amazing blues number. Never fails to knock me out. 7.) Give Us Your Blessing -- The Shangri-Las -- Timeless melodrama from the death rock days. I just have to list the next one: 8.) Freight Train (live version, with steel drums) -- Taj Mahal -- Perfection. What a great day! |

1) High-The Cure 2) Goldfinger-Ash 3) Tony's Theme-Pixies 4) Labyrinth-The Cure 5) Push Your Head Towards The Air-Editors 6) Better Version Of Me-Fiona Apple 7) In My Place-Coldplay #1 is my favorite Cure pop song ever. #4 is much lower on that list. #7 is from when I didn't find Coldplay so incredibly boring. |

1.) Eyesight to the Blind -- Aleck Miller -- Classic blues done by "The Original Sonny Boy Williamson" in his laconic Mississippi style. 2.) Let's Get It On -- Marvin Gave -- from the followup album to "What's Going On?" Certainly one of my favorites of his records. 3.) A Piece of Gold -- Bobby "Blue" Bland -- forgettable "B" side, I deleted it. 4.) Lost In the Stars -- Tony Bennett -- great Kurt Weill finale that always puts a lump in my throat. 5.) I'm Back Pretty Baby -- Raymond Hill boogie from Sun Records. 6.) Loving You -- Minnie Riperton -- unusually pretty soul number. 7.) Count Every Star -- The Ravens -- "Sing pretty" item from one of the groups that originated doo wop. |

Let's get this revved up again. 1.) Get That Hump in Your Back -- Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. Proto-rock-and-roll from one of the groups who invented it before Elvis did. Nice guitar solo. 2.) The Lip -- Louis Prima -- a relentlessly hip, mostly Keely Smith number with drug references and a dig at Liberace. 3.) OK America! Part One -- The Boswell Sisters are among the performers on this medley of early Thirties tunes that didn't make it. 4.) Song For Bobe -- The Dirty Dozen Brass Band in a Latino-funk number with great drums. 5.) Time To Hit the Road Again -- Bubby Rush. Beautiful vocal and piano blues from the last remaining old master. Not to put the new guys down, but this is the stuff that brings eyesight to the blind. 6.) Loving You Could Never Be Better -- George Jones. If you don't like this guy, you need serious help. 7.) The End of Our Road -- Gladys Knight and the Pips -- uptempo Motown record from the Atlanta diva. 6.) |
