Universal's Inner Sanctum series (anthology... or whatever) is similar to The Whistler in that each film had the same star... but in a different role.

Yes, the Whistler was a series, and was sold that way to exhibitors. As mentioned, "Inner Sanctum" was another example of that kind of thing. Wasn't there also a "Mystery Club" of some sort that tied in with novels?

I remember seeing a lot of old mystery books with a "Crime Club Selection" logo, and I think the name was attached to some films -- maybe just the adaptations of those books.
