Choreographer Ann Fletcher has now directed three pictures. The second, 27 Dresses, impressed me, and the new one, The Proposal, impresses me more. Sandra Bullock has always been a charmer, but in this picture she goes past that. She's an actress now, folks, and I think a great director has something to do with it. She plays an awful Canadian bitch (think Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl), who blackmails her assistant into marrying her so she can stay in the U.S. He takes her to meet his family in Alaska and she falls for them and him. Anything else would be a spoiler: the story is well built and keeps you guessing. Ignore the critics; this is a good 'un you can safely take your wife to and you'll like it even more than she does. That's how it worked for me. About Ann Fletcher, just one more thing: I'm hooked. She could direct Oliver friggin' Twist and I'd go see it. And I don't know about your lady, but when The Grand Duchess really likes a movie, she watches it over and over on TV. I suspect this will be one of those, and I'm glad.

The guy who wrote the script is Pete Chiarelli, who has up to now been a producer. I think he's been on the wrong track, because this script is funny, literate, ironic, and did I say funny? He too is a major talent & I hope to hear more from him.

This is a modern screwball comedy without a hint of realism, which makes me want to stand up and cheer. And oh yeah -- the audience got a lot of it. Not all, but enough. That's a good sign. I would love to see this make a bundle of money, and you can help by going to see it. You'll thank me. Four stars, maybe 4 1/2. A Touchstone film, (which, if anybody doesn't know, is Disney's grownup wing) and they deserve credit for green-lighting it.
