Never got a re-writable disc from Rodney, and whether the disc is RW or not you can still burn something after it's been finalized... depends on the system and burner you use. And yeah, it'll mess up the disc.

Radio Patrol is a fun serial. I have a copy of Serial Squadron and it is the EXACT same print that VCI had on VHS years ago. I compared the two some time ago and the same specs and pops appear in the same spots. Only difference was that the Serial Squadron version had "Copyright Eric Stedman" superimposed on the title screen of each and that, to me, is as annoying as putting a logo on the screen. And unnecessary.

VCI's DVD print will most likely be an improvement. They have not offered anything on DVD if they have not gotten an improvement from what they offered previous on VHS. Many of their VHS releases from the eighties were not up to par but they've been careful to directly to new masters when doing DVDs, which is why they haven't put all the serials on DVD that they came out on VHS previously. And since Radio Patrol was not in bad condition back on VHS, I'd say the DVD will be worth buying and will be an improvement. Remember, even if they go to the same master they had previous, they have newer equipment now that allows cleaner transfers.

As for extras, there isn't much they can add to the DVD anyway. What extras could there be other than text bios on the stars?

Does this include Captain Midnight, Mandrake, Red Ryder, etc., the serials they offered for $9.99 with their Green Hornet sale? I was hesitant to take advantage of their sale price, as I feared I'd be getting no improvement over the VHS copies I already own.

It includes most VCI DVDs (including Red). No point trying to upgrade Mandrake though. Hard to upgrade a DVD using the same print.

VCI offers the best prints available for CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT and THE ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER, the latter of which probbaly couldn't be any better. MANDRAKE was from a 3-quarter neumatic from the Library of Congress and I too doubt it could be improved, but if VCI had access to the same master and used upgraded technology, they could "tweak" the picture for better clarity.

I found Radio Patrol a bit lethargic.

Although I definitely spotted Tom Steele in a couple of walk-ons, it seemed like someone a little more heavily-set doubled for Mr. Withers in the fights.

Print-wise, rather a step down from the 2 Green Hornet serials. Intact, but definitely 16mm-ish, and the credits were indifferently cloned. Same PCA number throughout, insufficient attention to the switch from cameo introductions to cast roles after the first 3 chapters, and one chapter introduction even had a stutter. This despite a proud credit for “digitally restored”!

But “It’s a Universal!” and I’m glad I got to see it.

I too found VCI's new RADIO PATROL DVD disappointing. It is indeed from a 16mm print, and only slightly better than VCI's VHS release. Chances are they used the same master. There might have been some digital cleanup, but not enough to alter significantly what was a so-so transfer.

And it is Eddie Parker doubling for Withers. He's plainly visible in many shots, the big lummox.
