You have to hand it to Steven Sondheim; he never gives up. This is the show that once was once called Wise Guys, then Bounce, and I think there was another name too: anyway, it's the show about Addison and Wilson Mizener, Addison being the mad architect who built houses in Palm Beach and then tried to invent another town, Boca Raton, which later became a theme park with wild animals roaming free called Africa, USA, and is now a desert of little boxes all made out of you-know-what; and Wilson was the famous chiseler and pal of Irving Berlin who dashed off one of my very favorite movies, One Way Passage. The show has undergone seismatic changes in its decade-long evolution, and those of us who love Sondheim often wished he would turn his mind to a show with a girl in it, fer cryin' out loud, but in any case, it's final form is to my amazed delight a companion piece to Assassins, beginning with all the optimism of the turn of the twentieth century and ending with the country in the throes of greed and economic collapse. Just astoundingly pertinent. A brilliant save -- check it out! You especially, Black Tiger. It'll never be Oklahoma!, but at last it works. |
