Nice to see So Long at the Fair finally get some attention. Jean Simmons, returning by ship from the World's Fair, suffers the old disappearing husband trick and Michael Rennie helps her -- or does he? Paranoia runs amuk, and I won't spoil the ending. Simmons is beautiful as ever. Some people identify Rennie so strongly as Klaatu that they can't handle him in this part. Too bad for them. It's also nice to see expat American director Cy Endfield get some recognition. When Zulu came out we realized it came from a master director but had never heard of him. Now at last we see him in the bullpen, already putting 'em across the plate. Also nice to see the Brits get credit for something stronger than the Alec Guinness movies and Olivier's nutty Shakespeare rewrites. |
