After some of the recent attempts to revive our western heroes I am concerned about this.

I'd be interested if they based it on the darker and more entertaining radio version. The radio show is one of my all-time favorites. The TV show always put me to sleep.

Gunsmoke isn't the worst idea for a retread, although it wouldn't surprise me if they kept nothing more than the title and a lawman named Dillon -- which may be all most of the audience remembers.

There's a fine old tradition of tacking famous real-life names on scripts that didn't even reference the original person -- a clean-shaven Roy Rogers becomes Young Buffalo Bill, for example, in an absolutely typical Roy Rogers story. I can easily image some writer dusting off his unsold Clint Eastwood epic and doing a search-and-replace on a few character names.
