Deborah Kerr is the leader of five nuns who establish a school/hospital in the Himalayas; the building is a former palace waaaaaay atop a mountain peak, and is decorated with inappropriate visages on the wall. Not as inappropriate as some of the sisters behave around the hunky British overseer (David Farrar), though. Other hangers-on include Sabu as a young prince looking for education and teenage Jean Simmons, looking for... well, let's just say "fun" and leave it at that.

A Powell & Pressburger film (their next was the celebrated The Red Shoes) and an Oscar winner for special effects and cinematography; it's a masterpiece in both categories, the King Kong of its day - the sweeping landscapes were all created at Pinewood Studios. Filmed in gorgeous Technicolor, and I guarantee, you will never forget two things: the look of the picture; it is one of the most beautiful-looking movies I've ever seen; and Kathleen Bryon as the quickly-descending-into-madness Sister Ruth. Yikes! She is TERRIFYING by film's end. A great film.

This is the picture of Jean Simmons that made me look at the film:

I agree, it's a great film. Michael Powell keeps rising in my estimation, and by now he's hovering just below the very top. Thing is, I hated Red Shoes and Tales of Hoffman when I saw them as a boy -- have to watch them again before I pass final judgment, and I dread it.

Saw the Small Back Room at the Film Forum today with David Farrar and Kathleen Byron from Black Narcissus. Really gripping and enjoyable story of a bitter bomb diffusing expert during WWII (Farrar), his long-suffering girlfriend (Byron) and a devilishly clever new Nazi bomb design with built-in booby traps. Very gripping and suspenseful while maintaining the Powell/Pressberger wit and humour. The surrealist nightmare about a bottle of whiskey is a highlight.
