I think we can talk about anything. I don't know the answer to the health care problem, so I hope the folks in Washington do.
I wish I could be so confident that Washington can come up with a solution to the health care mess. Think of it this way, the Postal Service hires people like me. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Yeah, but isn't the postal service operated as a seperate business? If that is the case, which is my understanding, comparing the potential healthcare system to the postal system doesn't quite work.

I see *your* point, Pa, but a lot of people like to think that they're similar things, and I don't believe they are.

Well, the obvious response is that Medicare seems to work just fine, to the extent that the shouters at the town halls don’t want government messing with “their Medicare”.

(And don't take that necessarily as an endorsement. I used to audit a nursing home and I can tell you that Medicare is equally as bizarre and arcane as any private or state provider. Nevertheless, it does seem to operate with low overhead.)

Some people see "the government" as the enemy, and resent everything it does -- except when the Republicans are running things. I believe that is called partisanship.

I've always thought of the government as the people, even when it does things I don't approve of. Russia didn't scare me, bin Laden didn't scare me, and God knows bureaucrats don't scare me, so I find it difficult to support a party that has nothing to sell but fear -- especially when they're telling us to fear ourselves.
