That link is currently not working, but I can tell you that Warner Archives is releasing a 5-DVD set with all 52 "Our Gang" episodes from MGM, 1938-1944, most of which are lousy. I'll buy 'em anywayses.

The link is working now, and I'm told that the set will ship in September. Incidentally, I am also told that similar sets with all of the JOE McDOAKES and DOGVILLE shorts will be available soon.

Okay, so, when this was first posted on the Warners website, it was listed at $19.99 (same as all the other Warner Archives single-disc releases). That was apparently a mistake; the set disappeared and when it reappeared the asking price was $34.95, which is what it is going for now. I jumped in there fast and ordered it when it was $19.99, and that's what they charged me for when they shipped it. Ya snooze ya lose, folks.

Here is what the description of it says (along with a listing of the 52 titles):

Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Porky, Darla, Mickey, Waldo and Froggy have long been names to conjure with in the annals of screen comedy. They’re fun-loving members of Our Gang, one of the most beloved bunches of movie kids ever. And with this fabulous 5-Disc Collection of 52 Theatrical Shorts, you’ve struck the mother lode of laughter from Hollywood’s Golden Age. Popularized on television for generations following their run in theatres, these rib-tickling short subjects showcased an ensemble of groundbreakingly diverse youngsters, many of whom were skilled at song as well as slapstick. If you belong to the legions of this mischievous gang’s fans, this compilation (covering the years 1938-1944) of mirthful memories and lasting laughter belongs in your home collection. The Our Gang Collection is intended for the adult collector and is not suitable for children.

Uh-huh.

*cough cough*

I love the "not suitable for children" tag; apparently, a couple of anti-'Jap' remarks and a couple of racially insensitive gags make these shorts for adults only!

What may be a more real issue is what to say if the kids connect little Bobby Blake with his grown-up headlines.

I recall Blake on Saturday Night Live, doing a mock Our Gang reunion. Of course the featured attraction was Eddie Murphy as Buckwheat, but in retrospect the memorable gag was a grown-up Froggy who was doing time for murder. He had tracked down the doctor who messed up his tonsils.

As with many short subject series, the Our Gang films were not necessarily released in the order they were produced. That's not a big deal (unless you're anal) but one thing jumps out at me (besides the neighbor's dog)... Joy Scouts was the first short of the 1939-1940 Our Gang season, but it was released BEFORE Dog Daze, the last short of the 1938-1939 season. The reason that's noteworthy is because Joy Scouts introduced both a new director for the series, Edward Cahn (he replaced George Sidney) and because with the 1939-40 season, the notorious Mickey Gubitosi joined the cast. One of the reasons I vacillate between watching in production order and release order. (For you Our Gang aficionados, note that the other big anomaly is that The Lucky Corner was produced in early 1935 but not released until early 1936, which is why kids long-gone from the troupe suddenly reappear).

I just want to say that the Warner website is crap. If I wasn't a born puzzle solver I couldn't have done a thing with it, and God knows how much business they lose because it's so counter-intuitive. For a company that size, pathetic.

It's also incredibly slow.

I haven’t bought any Archive product, but I’ve gotten the impression that overall it’s been a negative for Warners’ reputation.

Besides all the pricing and website-problem rants on various sites, Barrie Maxwell’s latest column takes them to task for poor video masters and disc manufacturing errors.

A great idea but apparently they need better execution.

Well, they spoiled us for quite some time, and then decided to issue less cost-intensive product. People like it when good things stay good. Plus, there's no excuse for the website. It took me about half an hour of trial and effort to set up an account -- I would have given up in disgust if I hadn't promised a Canadian friend I'd buy something he couldn't get.

I agree with you. There's a weird curse on the Hal Roach stuff. Everything has gone wrong for a long, long time.
