These are already available on the TCM site, 'cause I just ordered them. 54 bucks and some change, with regular shipping. |

Not sure if it is because the official date is the 31st or if the release is more popular than planned, but I just got a "on backorder" email from TCM. I also saw a promo for the set on TCM about 7 AM on TCM this morning- hopefully this will encourage their releasing more titles like this |

I received the same backorder email. I also picked up the TCM movies guide for $4.95, and it looks like that's on it's way. |

Only two I can weigh in on: The Devil and the Deep is plumb awful. Overacting by all, especially Laughton, and Grant's barely in it. Remember the Night is a true classic though, a fine if sentimental script, beautifully directed. It's about time somebody speaks up for Leisen; maybe I will. He sure made some wonderful films, including three of my all-time faves, Easy Living, Midnight, and Hold Back the Dawn. Why Sirk is revered and Leisen forgotten is one of life's mysteries. And what's this about being a legend in the UK? Edited by panzer the great & terrible, Oct 30 2009, 08:46 AM.

Well, I am a legend SOMEWHERE. My set has arrived direct from Turner, and I'm working on reviews now. |

Saw Murders in a Zoo on TCM. Classic opening scene, impressive exit for the villain, an off-camera death by crocodiles and a surprising number of non-stock-footage animals. But the rest of the film was pretty much by the numbers, with a little too much emphasis on a comic press agent. For me, it should have either gone more whole-hog horrific or dialed it way down for creepy suspense. And while Charlie Ruggles is usually funny (among other things, he was the dithering voice of Aesop on the Bullwinkle show), here he had too little material and too much time for it. He sounded like an actor in a stage show, vamping and stalling because somebody else missed a cue. Found myself thinking this zoo was a liability lawyer's dream come true: little garden bridges over hungry crocodiles, handy switches that open all the cages, and easy access for little kids when the place is supposedly locked up tight. Also, love how mobs of kids are screaming to get in after the morning papers report the horrible death. This is the way to get children interested in natural science. |
