Roberta's is a happenin' dress design studio in Paris; Irene Dunne is its lead designer. When Roberta dies, the shop is passed on to her nephew, Randolph Scott, who becomes Irene's partner in business and in life. Only Randy still loves his old flame, Claire Dodd, who shows up out of nowhere to get some fancy dresses. Oh, yeah, and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers sing and dance to "I Won't Dance", "Lovely to Look At", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". I dunno, I didn't like this one quite as much as the other Astaire & Rogers pictures I've seen; it was the third one (after Flying Down to Rio and The Gay Divorcee) and still has a bit too much plot, and frankly, I don't really care what th' heck happens to Scott & Dunne. I think Irene did her own singing, and she had a lovely voice; her rendition of "Smoke" is a high point. The comedy relief in this one is lame compared to the other films in the series. This is NOT a bad film at all, and I enjoyed it, and the DVD looks marvelous. It's just one of the weaker films in the series is all. Edited by Laughing Gravy, Aug 31 2009, 12:19 PM.

Agree about Roberta. Last week I was newly in love with Irene Dunne. I had just seen that curious semi-musical “Stingaree”, directed by William Wellman of all people, in the Lost and Found RKO series. What a beautiful and gifted woman! Singer, comedienne, high-class lady from another era when people actually had to have talent to be in show business. Alas, today I learned she was also an ardent Republican and Eisenhower supporter. Another bubble burst. (Now, I actually like Ike, so don’t nobody get on me.) |

Don't blame her for long-forgotten political debates. What's Dunne is Dunne. |

Har, har! "Alas, today I learned she was also an ardent Republican and Eisenhower supporter." *shrugs* Let's not go TOO far in condemning folks. For all we know, she'd been sleeping with every Communist in Hollywood since 1935 and needed to act the part of a good Republican so the HUAC folks didn't get her. Besides, Eisenhower Republicans have nothing whatsoever in common with Republicans these days. |

I beg your pardon, Gentlemen! You are discussing my Dream Girl! But I guess if James Carville can love Mary Matalin, I can still love Irene. |

I won't try a joke but I couldn't help but feel that that is exactly the kind of straight line that Groucho loved to respond to. Too bad he's not still around and a Balconeer. |

Isn't it pretty to think that if he was still around, he might well be a balconeer. |
