Disney has bought Marvel.

Good thing? Bad thing? Probably won't make much difference either way?

I enjoyed Michael Barrier's comment on this earth-shattering news:

"I Probably Should Say Something......about Disney's acquisition of Marvel Entertainment, as reported today in the New York Times and elsewhere on the Web, but I don't know what it would be. Reading about this union of two enormous media companies, I felt as if I'd been hiking through the jungle and suddenly come upon two very large warthogs making love. Best to avert one's eyes and beat a hasty retreat."

When you stop and consider, it's hard to be surprised by who owns what any more. I never quite got over Warner buying Mad Magazine way back when.

I have Fantastic Four #1 in my limited comic collection...

I wonder if this development will increase the comics value...ie; It's from the original Marvel stable...pre Disney, etc.?

If so thats great...but other than that I could care less what Disney does or dosen't do with Marvel.

I think their collection of "troubled" superheros & their trials/tribulations are stale to the point of tedious anyway...Enough....All of us have problems...Why would I want to wallow in the emotional difficulties of a superhero??

If I have a choice to 1.) go to the movies & endure a 2 hour 45 minute bore sinking under the weight of its own noxious violence & impossible to fathom half baked "mythology" or 2.) watching a crisp 20 minute episode of any serial you can name...I'll take the serial episode.

I agree with most of the points made here about the poichase, but "two warthogs making love"? I think both companies have come up with some decent films the last few years. Maybe chubby people making love?

The possibilities are endless though, after what Disney did with some of their classic characters with Square/Enix.

All I can say is nothing. Marvel has been going downhill for years with lousy comics and even worse movies while all the Mouse House can think of is money, money, money. Neither company has had anything worthwhile for years so I don't expect either of them to improve that standing-even though Hannah Montana Meets Spider-Man I guess will appeal to somebody.

My wife and I were discussing this last night and one thought came up. With Marvel having been a large part of Universal's theme park, with the character's now being part of Disney, and probably going to be appearing in their MGM park, it brought up the question of was Disney just trying to take out an amusement park rival.

Do amusement parks really make more money than movies? I dunno, just askin'. Since nobody's mentioned it, the Spider-Man, X Men and Iron Man movies made a lot of money -- isn't that what Disney wants?

In the Los Angeles Times, Patrick Goldstein wrote:

"The Marvel deal, like the $7.4-billion 2006 pact Iger negotiated to bring Pixar into the Disney fold, is another sign that Disney's top brass realizes that the company's reign as an original creative engine for mass entertainment is over. Once an idea factory full of brilliant animators and imagineers, Disney is now a mass merchandising machine in search of exploitable product, whether it comes from Marvel, Pixar or DreamWorks, which will be releasing its upcoming slate through Disney as well."

Heard some more info about the acquisition yesterday. Universal will get to keep the Marvel characters, and their Marvel themed rides, for a licensing fee, but must also guarantee a specific amount of space for Marvel merchandise in the park. Disney will also be sending their accountants to oversee Universal's books to make sure they are getting their fair share. With a sizable chunk of tourist money going straight to Disney, it sounds like they bought a share in Universal without actually having to buy the park outright.

Well, in case ya didn't catch sort-of related news, DC Comics is now "DC Entertainment" and Paul Levitz is out as Publisher; the funnybook section is going to be run by the woman whose past claim to fame has been negotiating the rights between Warners and J.K. Rowling.

Comic books these days are simply places for corporations to mine to find characters to make movies and video games about, which is too bad. Kids need comics books, in my opinion.

Sorry to hear this news. Levitz was strongly in favor of the DC Archives line and although it had to scale back in recent years, was hoping on expanding it again. This may be a blow to us fans of Silver Age material.

Just learned some news that maybe Disney got poned on the Marvel deal. Turns out Marvel had already permanently signed the film rights of the characters to the studios that were already making the films, like Columbia's Spider-Man trilogy. So Disney isn't going to be making any live action superhero movies in the near future. Still I'm sure that they will still make a profit from toy sells if nothing else.
