It's about 1:20 AM on Friday the 3rd of September. I went outside and there was a gigantic, perfect ring of what looked like clouds around the moon. I immediately had superstitious thoughts about the feminine principle, especially since there was a planet within the circle that without reason I decided was Venus. So I turned to good ole Google and guess what? it's something that happens this time of year The full moon illuminates ice crystals in the atmosphere. If they're very high up, the circle is huge as it was tonight; if the circle is small, close to the moon, it means the moisture is low down and can indeed predict rain (though unreliably), as our ancestors believed. I had already been blown away today by Inglorious Basterds, and now here was another overwhelming reason to admire the creative principle, as well as the natural world shorn of superstition. When they threw that water on the Wicked Witch of the West, what were her last words? HINT: They weren't I'm melting, melting. After that she said "What a world," and after THAT she said --- what? The prize is a brand new untouched copy of Radio Patrol. And check the late night skies: no telling what you'll see this time of year! Edited by panzer the great & terrible, Sep 7 2009, 08:02 PM.

One of our local weather forecasters said the bright planet near the moon was Jupiter. |

Nope, wasn't Venus Panzer. It was a full moon, and that time it would have been overhead, and since Venus is closer to the Sun than we are, you can't see it more than a couple of hours after sunset. Galileo Stark |

Well actually, Galileo, it was about halfway to the horizon, but I take your point. I said I assumed "without reason" that it was Venus, so I think I'm covered. |

For Margret Hamiltons last dialogue - You cursed brat! Look what you've done! I'm melting! Melting! Oh, what a world, what a world! Who would've thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? I'm gone! I'm gone! I'm going! |

Thanks for the post, Panzer. I saw the moon and cloud formation as well and it impressed me that there was probably more to the celestial story than I knew. |

It's hard to be cynical when you see something that pure and majestic; it took my breath away. I actually woke the Grand Duchess up to see it, a risky proposition at best, and after the inevitable grumbling she actually thanked me for doing it. |
