So, theyv'e got this ape, see, and it turns out to be an "orang-utang" that they name Jupiter and they make some cute little outfits for him and teach him how to cook and do dishes and smoke a pipe. Ewww. So when the boat is done, Gideon, Pencroft, and that cute li'l Herbert sail for Tabor Island, to seek a castaway stranded there, whose existence was foretold to them, apparently, in a bottle they found. Read this, I'm gonna go get some coffee.

THE WILD MAN! Well, although he's not wearing a nice leisure suit like in the 1951 serial, it's good to see him. The chubby pirates and the Mercurians can't be far behind. Okay, so, more months pass and additional mysterious stuff happens, but I don't see Rulu or any giant bees, so I'm a little disappointed. They keep building stuff to keep busy, including a telegraph so that they can contact each other when they're on the other side of the island. Eventually, they become buds with Ayrton, the Wild Man, who was a pirate once but is really, really sorry so they forgive him, what th' hell, right? Eventually, speaking of pirates, a ship shows up at Lincoln Island (that's what they named their li'l spot, apparently, and they all try and hide. |

Ayrton escapes, but the next morning a scouting party of six escaped convict/pirates heads for the island - but no sooner do they leave their ship than it gets all blowed up by a torpedo, dooming all their buds. Eventually, they attack, and Herbert Brown, the cute one, is hit by a bullet and would've died despite all the monkey's best efforts to save him except that some quinine mysteriously shows up.

Where were we? Oh, yeah. Lincoln Island, apparently. So they get a mysterious telegram one day(!) and that leads them around the island to various spots, including the volcano that seems to be getting ready to pop, and eventually to a hidden cave just at the water's edge, only accessible at low tide, where they find...

Well, they all hang out and pray for a while, good Christians and true that they be, but pretty soon the volcano sets to rumbling again, so "Holy sweet Jesus H. Fuckin' Christ!" they yell and head for their boat.

The rescue ship was sent from a letter received - in Nemo's handwriting, the thoughtful old cuss. Dunno how it got posted. They all go back to America and live happily ever after. I dunno what happened to the monkey, but I care. Oh, yes, I care. Screw the 10 issues, I want the TATTOOS!

There's a lovely one-page bio of Mr. Verne, but who cares? Not me, bub. And didja notice that the tattoo ad spelled both Olive Oyl and Swee'pea's names wrongs? What's up with THAT?!? And how weird is it that they don't mention a FLASH GORDON tattoo - but they mention there's a DR. ZARKOV tattoo. Oh, yeah, that'll impress the girls. Where were we? Oh, yeah, here, order your own damn funnybooks. I'm outta here. See ya next month for a REALLY scary Halloween funnybook, kids! Buh-bye! Enjoy your weekend!

I really liked the art on this one. It reminded me a little of Mike Ploog's. When I was a laddie collecting C.I., I was always frustrated looking at the list of comics (as shown above) and seeing that some of the numbers were always missing. My curiosity was killing me to find out what they were. I remember No.8, Arabian Nights, was always missing from the issues I had. Plus, I had no idea I was buying reprints of earlier issues. Ahh the innocence of youth. |
