Pricey - all 13 albums with extras in TWO boxed sets - mono for £179.99 - stereo for £159.99! A friend of the Beatles and editor of The Merseybeat newspaper said the pricier mono set was 'for purists but fans would want both'! The lady presenter said the little cardboard sleeves of the CDs were exact copies of the 12" versions right down to the way they were folded! I wonder if they were 'laminated with Clarifoll'? :-D Very interesting hour-long show last night! |

About the Liverpudlian Lads? The sets are pricey here too, but there's no reason to buy them right away. They'll cost half as much in a year or so, and since we know every note of every tune (well, at least we wild colonials do), what's the rush? I won't buy the stereo box. The albums weren't released in true stereo anyway until the Final Five, and I like the mono White Album better. A mono Abbey Road or Let it Be would be pointless -- as far as I know they never were released in mono. Sergeant Pepper is more fun in stereo so I'll get it as a stand-alone. Incidentally I just read McCartney's book and was surprised to learn he doesn't think much of Sergeant Pepper. You'd think he'd feel that way about the white album, since on that one John's songs outshine his, except for "Blackbird," my favorite McCartney song ever. But to hear him tell it, Sergeant P was a throwaway. Whooda thunk it? None of the reviews have said which version of Let It Be they're going to release in this batch, and I'd really like to know, though it's not one of my favorites. |

Don't like Hey Jude all that much - I remember the look of pain on my brother-in-law's moosh at Hey Jude's English TV premiere one Christmas when the ending, # Lah lah lah la-la-lah lah, la-la-la lah, hey Jude! went on and on but it's alright. Please Please Me by John Lennon (says the Merseybeat editor) is excellent, IMHO. The Merseybeat guy also said that the Beatles loved Brigitte Bardot and wanted her on the cover of Pepper - someone boobed and reproduced a Madame Tussaud's waxwork of Diana Dors! ![]() Merseybeat said the Beatle's first record was an amateur effort for Philips; their first professional disc was Cry for a Shadow - BOTH George Harrison songs! The Shadows (England's answer to The Ventures) were Cliff Richard's backing group - he was England's answer to Elvis! Heard some comments about Pepper last night from The Beatles in a little documentary (they're all over the show in England) but didn't hear what Paul thought!
