Getting back momentarily to Miss Allyson: One or two of her early shorts were included on various WB DVD’s.

She obviously had some musical / dancing talent, and that high-wattage perky disposition was on full display even then. But she wasn’t awful by any definition.

I can only assume that Louis B. Mayer got a hold of her and turned her into the monster we all now love to hate.

Y'know, I'm sure there must've been OTHERS on his list, but Miss Allyson is the ONLY old-time film star that I can recall my dad having an active dislike for. Well, I just thought of another one: Nelson Eddy & Jeanette MacDonald.

They were impossible not to hate. A shame about Miss McDonald since she started out very, very sexy. Joan Crawford was another one who started out cool and turned into a creep. The one I loathe the most is Loretta Young -- after a promising turn in A Man's Castle, she went actress-y on us, coming across as a phony, no matter what the role or who the director.

I always kinda liked June Allyson, but I couldn't agree with you more about Loretta Young.

Yeah. There's the creepy story about her making people pay a fine when they used a four letter word on the set, and the possibly apocryphal tale about her secret illegitimate kid fathered by an eminently respectable actor I won't name, but she comes off as a smug Catholic hypocrite. In A Man's Castle, one of her early films, she's absolutely great though, so maybe she wasn't born awful -- something bad could have happened to her. Give her the benefit of a doubt.

I can't make excuses for Crawford though -- after the bloom of youth fell off her, she went weird. For sheer awfulness, is there any star performance that even comes close to Crawford in Trog? Silliest damn movie ever.

There’s that story about William Wellman throwing $20 into Loretta’s bowl and then sailing into her.
