American popular music has produced few singers who redefined the entire genre and who developed a style that could never really been imitated and certainly never matched. The greatest of these is the incomparable Darlene Edwards who, along with her accompanist husband Jonathan, created some of the greatest popular singing ever heard. I am sure most of the music lovers here like Morty and Paul Panzer are familiar with the song stylings of Ms. Edwards. How about discussing some of your favorite performances from their vast repertoire?

For those who don't know, Darlene and Jonathan Edwards was a spoof Paul Weston and Jo Stafford pulled. I think there were two albums. Miss Darlene would go alarmingly off-key at the drop of a hat, and if you think that's easy and you know how to sing, try it. There is a similar country music album, The Statler Brothers' Lester Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys, Alive at Johnny Mack Brown High School! It's even funnier. I won't make the obvious comment about there being no equivalent rock album. Oh. OK, I will: who would know it was a joke?

There were 5 albums plus a couple of greatest hits collections and at least one single ("Stayin' Alive" b/w "I Am Woman").

I found a little of Jonathon & Darlene went a l-o-o-o-o-o-ng way.

I much preferred Jo as Cinderella G. Stump:

I also liked Karen Tedder ("the durndest thing you'll ever larn is how to love... & get a little lovin' right back")

Well, it is satire.

Serious question though, Morty. I don't know a lot about singing but a friend of mine who did once told me that what Jo did as Darlene is to sing sharp and that is much harder to do than to sing flat. I know you know a lot about vocalizing so could you confirm that for me? Is it harder to sing sharp than flat?

In a word, YES!!

It ain't hard at all to sing flat... I do it all the time (not on purpose, of course)!!

For years, Jo was purported to have perfect pitch. On Wikipedia, they have a quote where she disputed that. I kinda believe it as it would be extremely difficult to sing sharp as she does if she did have that mixed blessing.

I tried to produce a demo one time with three singers, one of them a gal who unconsciously sang sharp. Her songs were a nightmare and a complete waste of money, but I got great tape on the other two. They quarelled with me about the incompetent girl and that was the end of that.

I think Miss Stump was modeled on Hank Williams' wife singularly untalented wife Audrey. Her record "The Parakeet Polka" may well be the worst thing ever waxed.
