I recently watched Radio Patrol, and found it okay but kind of pedestrian in places. How does your audience feel about a kid living in a junkyard with a dog? |

My audience is too busy stuffing pizza and popcorn down their bloated faces to care. They love noir and really enjoyed Gangbusters so I'm thinkin' Radio Patrol would be fun. But they loved the first Hornet serial, too. And we've never shown a Dick Tracy, so there's that. |

They need to see Dick Tracy, Pa Stark and Pa's guess-which-chapter-I'll-die-in clan. |

Ol' lover boy and stud muffin Pa has thousands of sons all over the world, mostly in countries with no extradition treaties with the USA. |

We ended up with The Masked Marvel. They liked it. Well, chapter one, anyway. Lotsa stuff gets blowed up. |

A great serial. Besides having some of Republic's best fights, it is also their slickest serial, and moves with the speed of an express train. |

I have to say this is one time I totally agree with Pa (even old Stan thought it was great). The serial runs on all cylinders, the exploding miniatures are great, and some of the cliffhangers are genuinely clever. When posters complain that the four insurance investigators are bland, I roll my eyes heaven-ward. What exactly are you looking for in a film, people? What was your source for this one, LG? I'd really like to upgrade. |

Only this time you totally agree with me? Gee thanks. After all, the insurance agents aren't the hero of the serial, the Marvel is. Tom Steele does have more presence here than in any other of his roles, and one thing to pay attention to is how gracefully he moves, even in the fights.

Well, we finished The Masked Marvel this week. A very popular serial, and I've been asked for a sci-fi serial next. Here are the straight sci-fi serials we've seen in the past 10 years or so, so they'd be out... Radar Men from the Moon Flash Gordon The Phantom Empire Mysterious Island Undersea Kingdom The Lost City Buck Rogers Darkest Africa And here are the other serials we've watched... Batman and Robin The Spider’s Web Spy Smasher Jungle Girl Daredevils of the Red Circle The Spider Returns The Adventures of Captain Marvel Mysterious Doctor Satan The Shadow G-Men vs. the Black Dragon Secret Service in Darkest Africa Terry and the Pirates Zorro’s Fighting Legion The Green Hornet Captain Midnight Drums of Fu Manchu Gang Busters Batman Manhunt of Mystery Island Captain America Holt of the Secret Service The Masked Marvel Any votes for what sci-fi serial we should show? I'm thinkin' either FG's Trip to Mars or Monster and the Ape. I don't have Purple Monster Strikes on DVD or I'd consider that, too. Thoughts? Anything I'm forgetting? I considered Commando Cody but there are no cliffhangers and each episode is pretty long for a short. |

Trip to Mars and Monster and the Ape are both good choices but I would lean toward Trip to Mars - How can you go wrong with Flash Gordon, Ming, and a plethora of Martians the only drawback is Hap the reporter. |

You can cheat and run the first 13 episodes of Disney's "Zorro". There's a story arc that runs all the way through; B movie genius Norman Foster writes and directs several; George J. Lewis brings Republic serial credentials; and Disney gives it a nice gloss with matte paintings and frequent swordplay. All it lacks is proper cliffhangers: Zorro always ends with a momentary victory at least. The first 13 episodes include Zorro's origin and his battles against the corrupt Captain Monastario, ending with Monastario's defeat for what looks like a proper serial finale. With the next episode they start a series of shorter arcs, mostly united by a shadowy mastermind called The Eagle. He tries to take over California for the season finale. The second season is much closer to regular episodic TV. A story arc and/or guest star may linger over a few weeks, but no long-term villain and no season finale. |

I'd do Trip To Mars. Monster and the Ape isn't a very good print. |

King of the Rocketmen is a good Sci Fi serial. I also like FG Conquers the Universe. Trip to Mars would be a good pick. Monster and the Ape from Cheezy Flicks is a decent print, but it loses steam quickly. How about Atom Man Vs Superman? The whole Phantom Zone thing is very 50s sci fi-y. |
